Advantages: Children will enjoy
Disadvantages: Could have done with more action songs
I bought My First Album CD + DVD for my son for Christmas. I paid £10.99 for it, but I have seen it on sale since for £9.99.
The CD has 50 favourite songs and nursery rhymes on it, including more traditional ones like baa baa black sheep and the wheels on the bus, whilst also having more up to date ones such as Balamory theme, Fimbles theme and Can We Fix It? Because of the wide variety of songs that are on the CD it will cater for any child's need and parents who are listening to it with the children will find something on there that they will know, enabling them to sing along - maybe ones you remember from when you were younger or maybe you, like me have children who love Bob the Builder and Balamory and like watching them everyday! - you will get to know these songs as well.
The DVD has five different sections on there; Nursery Rhymes, Learning Rhymes, Action Songs, Short Stories and Learning Games.
Nursery Rhymes has Baa Baa Black Sheep, Hickory Dickory Dock, Incy Wincy Spider, Jack and Jill and the Grand Old Duke of York. Each one you select to play brings up pictures to accompany the rhyme and the words are on the bottom of the screen. The words light up as they are sung and they play the rhyme three times.
Learning Rhymes has the Alphabet song, Ten green bottles, 12345 once I caught a Fish, Old Macdonald had a Farm, I am the Music Man an I can sing a Rainbow. Again this had pictures with the words on the bottom of the screen, highlighted as they were sung.
Action Songs was by far the best section. This had eight songs - Dingle dangle scarecrow, If you're happy and you know it, I'm a little teapot, Ring-a-ring of roses, Here we go round the Mulberry bush, The wheels on the bus, Row, row, row your boat, and Heads, shoulders, knees and toes. This section has a group of children and adults doing the actions to the songs. Again the words are on the bottom of the screen and are highlighted as they are sung. My son loved this section.
Short Stories has Little Red Riding Hood, Three little Pigs, Cinderella, Goldilocks and the three Bears and Snow White and the seven Dwarfs. As with the other sections there are pictures with the story and the words are on the bottom of the screen and highlighted when spoken.
The last section Learning Games had only three different choices - Numbers, Sounds and Colours. The numbers section had questions like count the bananas. In the sounds section you had to guess which instrument makes the sound, and you are given a choice of four to pick from. You use your remote to select the correct answer. Colour was exactly the same.
I did enjoy both discs, but was slightly disappointed with the DVD as I thought that maybe they could have put a few more of the action songs in, so that you had a bit more choice when you watched - maybe have twelve songs. As the songs are not very long and your child may want to play the same section several times, it can get a little bit repetitive.
The learning section is slightly repetitive with questions like find the red flower, find the white bead, but as this is just due to the age range that the DVD caters for, then it cannot be taken as a criticism.
The action songs section was very good - my son loved this part and would be standing up doing all the actions.
The CD was very good - lots of songs are on there that are both old and new. Again with this my little boy was quite happy to have it on and dance around with the music. It was very enjoyable.
Even though I was slightly disappointed I would still recommend it as it is a good package and children will love it, it keeps them entertained and it does help them to learn.
