      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      pleasing

Spending some quality time with a Celine Dion album is something I like to do at weekends. The week is over and her music is instantly soothing and relaxing. This album gathers some of her biggest love songs...though surely every song she has ever released is a love song?!

The obvious choice is 'My Heart Will Go On' which is anthemic, sickly and downright annoying as she belts it out as if there is no tomorrow. The song has suffered from being overexposed, but the melody remains pleasing ands manages to make you go all googly.

'It's All Coming Back To Me Now' is an epic event, with a million verses and a barnstorming climax in which Celine really pushes her vocal boundaries. It is one to play when you need a boost. I also enjoy 'A New Day Has Come' which is more refined, verging on the wispy. The melody is breezy and light and the song is bright and has positive inspiring lyrics.

Less impressive is 'Taking Chances' which sees her shouting out the chorus like some old crow delivering a weather warning. Not a good tune and some unpleasant notes in here. Better is the dreamy 'Falling Into You' with glorious backing vocals and the sense that it is floating away on a tide of passion.

The second disc continues the trend of romance, as she gets frisky with R.Kelly on 'Im You're Angel.' The song is way too laborious and pompous, but both singers do a good job. Head to 'Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore' which is an effortless and sexy track, Celine sounds so sensual on this one it makes you want to hug her up close.

She toys with dance on 'Misled' coming across as a vixen, the song has dated badly, but it adds some variety to the CD. By the time you hit 'Call The Man', which is a ploy on her part to lure all unsuspecting gentlemen through her open window, you will be positively chilled.

There are 36 songs on here, a very strong collection with all the relevent tracks that you could possibly want from her English catalogue.

        Outstanding material from Celine

        Celine Dion:

My Love - Ultimate Essential Edition:

        The Songs:

        Disc 1:

        1. My Heart Will Go On (Love theme from 'Titanic')

A wonderfully arranged and beautiful love song that introduces the CD nicely, this song was number 1 for a number of weeks and the theme to one of the highest grossing films guaranteeing Celine a hit. The lyrics clearly define the feeling between two lovers and the instrument interlude will make your hairs stand on end. In my personal opinion, I think that this song demonstrates Celine's ability and shows her voice in all it's perfection and proves that Celine was made for Ballads and Love Songs. 9/10

        2. Think Twice

Another chart topper in which the power of Celine's voice increases as the song progresses. With vocal power, beautiful lyrics and a slightly rock tinge with a great guitar solo, this song demonstrates what Celine does best. 8/10

        3. It's All Coming Back To Me Now

This is one of my favourite songs. It's quite long but you don't lose interest. Instrumentally it's brilliantly arranged and together with Celine's powerful voice it's very dramatic and an outstanding song. The note she hits towards the end sends shivers down my spine. 10/10

        4. A New Day Has Come

Metaphorically speaking, I think this song lyrically suggests a new stage in Celine's life and career. A beautifully delicate ballad. 8/10

        5. My Love (Live Version)

I don't know why but I always skip past this song, it's not particularly dreadful but I think she has so much more to offer. 6/10

        6. Taking Chances

This is a lovely song but nowhere near demonstrates Celine's brilliance, I was quite disappointed when she released this in fact, she can do better. 7/10

        7. That's The Way It Is

Another more slightly up-tempo song, this is more pop than ballad but better in the way that her voice is pure brilliance as usual. 9/10

        8. The Power Of Love

This song is a cover, originally performed by Jennifer Rush. In my personal opinion Celine's version is the best by far, she brings so much power and emotion to a lyrically brilliant song. Another soppy song, but that's why we love her. 8/10

        9. Because You Loved Me (Theme from 'Up Close and Personal')

Another of my favourites, this is a real tear jerker. The lyrics are incredible and the vocals full of emotion and feeling. A song you can relate to when in love... 10/10

        10. Tell Him (Duet with Barbra Streisand)

A beautiful duet of two amazing voices which compliment each other effortlessly. With two such amazing artists you'd probably expect the vocals to be competitive and over the top but they're not. 7/10

        11. Falling Into You

This song has a different element added to the usual mix of great voice and emotion. Although her voice isn't shown off to the best of it's ability, it's a great song nonetheless. I can't put my finger on what's different, but it works and I think that this song is quite understated and overshadowed by her more popular hits. 9/10

        12. I Drove All Night

Another cover but more upbeat and with a dance feel, a brilliant song anyway both the original and Cyndi Lauper's version. But again Celine stamps her own impression on it and makes it something new. 9/10

        13. I'm Alive

Upbeat with a great bassline, not your usual Celine but still brilliant. I love this song, everytime I hear it I crank up the volume and feel the beats through the speaker with her incredible voice laid over the top. 9/10

        14. All By Myself

This is the ultimate break up song. Everybody will be able to relate to it at some point and the scene in Bridget Jone's Diary portrays it brilliantly. Full of heartbreak and emotion, you'll want to cry and sing it at the top of your voice whilst drinking a lonely bottle of wine. 10/10

        15. Alone

This is probably my least favourite song by Celine, I hate to say it but I think her voice is a bit too much for this song, quite screechy in fact. I preferred the original... I feel like such a traitor... 5/10

        16. Immortality

You would never imagine pairing a sound such as the BeeGees with a voice like Celine's but it works, an understated hit.

        17. Beauty And The Beast (Duet with Peabo Bryson)

A beautiful song from a beautiful film. The voices of the duo compliment each other perfectly and make for an effortless masterpiece to be loved by all. 10/10

        18. There Comes A Time

A peaceful, melodic end to disc one. The lyrics are cleverly metaphorically written. 7/10

        Disc 2

        1. River Deep, Mountain High

More upbeat with a faster tempo and another cover version. The outstanding vocal's make an already amazing song even better. 8/10

        2. One Heart

Another upbeat one, I don't think this sounds like Celine but demonstrates that she does has a versatility outside of her usual love ballads. 8/10

        3. I'm Your Angel (Duet with R Kelly)

I do like this song, but feel that it's Celine's weakest duet. Another unlikely pairing, this song is quite boring in parts but her voice rescues the dullness. 7/10

        4. Only One Road

Only One Road peaked in the charts at number 8, a softer, more delicate song full of emotion both lyrically and vocally. A beautiful piece. 8/10

        5. Pour que tu m'aimes encore

I utterly adore this song, the French lyrics are beautiful and sung beautifully too. 10/10

        6. You and I

Upbeat and with a pop feel to it, not one of her best but still demonstrates her talent. 7/10

        7. To Love You More

A brilliant orchestral arrangement, different to the regular ballads, this song has something about it that made me fall in love with it. I can listen to it on repeat and not get bored. 10/10

        8. Eyes On Me

This song is edgier than what you'd usually expect. With a slightly eastern sound it opens the audience for Celine Dion fans. In my opinion it's not brilliant nor does it do her voice any justice but that said it's not bad either, just not one of my favourites. 6/10

        9. Have You Ever Been In Love

Another sentimental love song, beautifully written and performed. Very touching and emotional. 8/10

        10. The Reason

Fantastic song, clever lyrics, powerful emotional voice. Utter brilliance. 10/10

        11. Seduces Me

Another song I'm not too keen on and I can't quite explain why, it's just not for me. 5/10

        12. The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face

I cannot describe how beautiful this song is in every way, lyrically, instrumentally, vocally. It's pure genius and one of my favourites. It sends chills down my spine every time. 10/10

        13. Dance With My Father

Beautifully written with lots of emotion, another tearjerker which anyone who's ever lost someone close to them can relate to. 9/10

        14. Misled

This has a different feel to what we usually expect from Celine. It's more upbeat and has feistiness about the lyrics. Unfortunately, this song didn't fair too well in the charts peaking at number 15, but it's still a catchy tune... though not as good as we know and expect from such a talented voice. 7/10

        15. Love Can Move Mountains

This song isn't my cup of tea, but the gospel choir on this track is an added bonus to a cleverly crafted track. 7/10

        16. Call The Man

Such a powerful and brilliant track, this song shows off Celine's voice in all it's brilliance. 10/10

        17. Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)

Another tearjerker, this song tells the story of a mothers love for their child. Heart wrenchingly beautiful, I personally feel like I can really relate to this song. 10/10

        18. The Prayer (Duet with Andrea Bocelli)

I don't really like this song, I was waiting for it to kick in all the time and it just didn't. 6/10

        Overall:

A brilliant compilation, all Celine's greatest hits and more. Excellent value for money for outstanding vocal performance and brilliantly arranged tracks.
        10/10
