A dramatic departure from previous releases, with Dylan going all out country, having sewn the seeds on 'John Wesley Harding', this was a moment where Dylan turned his back, not for the first time, on the establishment which had embraced him, and re-defined himself again. His voice is disarmingly different throughout, apparently due to his giving up of cigarettes, as he performs in a smooth croon throughout, much different to the rasping delivery found on his earlier work. 'Lay Lady Lay' is the most well known track here, although a re-worked 'Girl From the North Country', performed as a duet with Johnny Cash, proves equally worthwhile. ... Read the complete review

Following on from the changed Dylan seen in John Wesley Harding, comes this album, the second of his post-crash releases, that sees him taking his country origins further still, and adopting a style of singing that could itself be considered rustic and country in style. The reason for this is that Dylan had at the time recently given up smoking, and as such he claims he voice instantly took on a completely different sound, which is the reason for the more nasal style of vocal on this record. The previous reviewer mentioned that Johnny Cash worked with Dylan on this, which is a bit of an exaggeration, as only one track of the duet is seen here, and the scale of their ... Adammico, why the brevity of this review? It is only intended for fans (at least of casual nature) of Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan as an artist can only be experienced and is too complex to explain in 500 words or so. Okay Okay 1st, you need to get past Bob Dylan singing with his nostrils. On this album, Johnny Cash works with Bob Dylan (almost as a duo) and they?re distinctive styles are not in sync (at all). Yes, it is somewhat country. Finally, it?s completely ramshackle.
