Advantages: Eclectic, Solid Performances, Early Bob Dylan Diversion
Disadvantages: It's Only 27 minutes Long, An Acquired Taste
Adammico, why the brevity of this review? It is only intended for fans (at least of casual nature) of Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan as an artist can only be experienced and is too complex to explain in 500 words or so. Okay Okay 1st, you need to get past Bob Dylan singing with his nostrils. On this album, Johnny Cash works with Bob Dylan (almost as a duo) and they?re distinctive styles are not in sync (at all). Yes, it is somewhat country. Finally, it?s completely ramshackle. The songs Girl From North Country is a country version of an early Bob Dylan recording with Johnny and Bob singing there own versions that almost clash, but after repeated listening become increasingly more engaging. Each listen makes me smile even wider. Its beauty comes from nowhere; it just is. To Be Alone With You is a simple love song that is accompanied with is perfectly accompanied by with upbeat R&B. I Threw It All Away is a solo extension from the above-written version of Girl From North Country. It features deeper lyrics, a better performance and a similar musical arrangement. Peggy Day is the missing link between his earlier bluesy recordings and To Be Alone With You. It?s upbeat, but has bittersweet lyrics. Lay Lady Lay is Bob Dylan?s 1st naked love song. All of his previous recorded ?love songs? were filled with anger, regret and often times just put down the opposite sex. This piece is haunting and majestic at the same time. It may be his most beautiful performance. One More Night is a decent filler track, but I would not consider it a hidden gem in the Dylan collection. Tell Me This Isn?t True could have been recorded on Blonde on Blonde (among others) and is a quality inclusion that works in the alternate upbeat/downbeat sequencing, but Country Pie makes is one of his grooviest ditties ever recorded and is recommended for anyone who likes the song, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat. It closes with Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You is a mi
d-tempo number that combines the sound and the theme of the entire album on one song. In all, it's a solid listen that endures the test of repeated listens for times when I have lest than 1/2 hour to spare.

- 22/04/03 Understood, but it is next to impossible to justifyably explain Dylan to a person that has never listened to a full Dylan album. |

- 22/04/03 Whilst writing just for the fans isn't necessarily a bad thing, non fans who might be considering buying into Dylan won't get much from it, hence the downrate. |
