Advantages: Full of energy, fantastic dark humour
Disadvantages: Your mummy might not approve...
Punk - ripped jeans, pink mohicans and safety pins. Oh and the music. But everyone knows punk was just overrated hype, right? I mean, the so-called songs were only three random chords with someone screaming and spitting over the top...
Wrong. Most of rock n roll's greatest songs consist of really straightforward musical structures - that's why 'Smoke on the Water' is the first thing you learn to play on the guitar. The Sex Pistols just take this to its ultimate extreme. The agressive delivery is perfectly suited to the bitingly sarcastic lyrics: I nearly cried with laughter the first time I heard Mr Rotten shouting 'I'm a lazy sod' repeatedly.
The thing most people seem to have missed about the Pistols is that their just so damn funny. So many of their lines make me want to howl: how could something as outrageous as 'I don't want a holiday in the sun/I want to go to the new Belsen' fail to be amusing? The Pistols aren't scary and they certainly aren't shocking anymore - not in a day and age where 12 year olds listen to Fat Boy Slim talking about f****** in heaven. One thing's for sure: they're still bloody entertaining and a b***** good rock n roll band.
Lame wannabies like Offspring and Greenday should give this a listen.

- 31/10/00 The Pistols were shocking at the time and it is hard to understand now, nearly 25 years later, how the word bollocks or saying Belsen Was a Gas or saying the F Word on television was upsetting to a lot of people. But I also think that of all the original punks bands, the Sex Pistols have not really stood the test of time. Listening to NMTB now, I don't get the same feeling of energy and excitement that it gave me at the time. However, I listen to early Clash, Buzzcocks etc and they still give me the same buzz. |

- 19/07/00 what a load of crap! - This album is amazing - you are only seeing this album 4 a mass genralization about punks - ripped jeans - arghhhhhhh!-it was people like you that killed punk! - dont take this personally but - you asaying johnny rotten is funny - ha ha ha ha - he sang about what was going on! - the winter of discontent - abortions - etc...-REAL LIFE IN GENERAL! - look up and find out what BELSEN was - and find out why he sang LONELY BOY? - i think that this too is a great album as you do but please dont criticise the people that made things possible 4 2day! |
