Advantages: Laid Back Album That Shows A New Mature Dylan After Self Portrait

Disadvantages: May Not Appeal To All

This is avery overlloked album in the Dylan catalogue, which is undeserved considering that it picks up from some of his previous records and proves to be one of the most relaxing Dylan record around.

1. If Not For You - A brilliant song to open the album that shows some of the maturity that Dylan had developed follwoing some '60s efforts. A nice love song that was done with Harisson of the Bootleg Series Volume 2 to great result.

2. Day Of The Locusts - This is more cocurrent with some of the other tracks on the album and shows a different style of wrtiting that would become more obvious on things like Planet Waves.

3. Time Passes Slowly - A very laid back track that seems to be Dylan's outlook on life and what he truly wants and deserves after some of his earlier tours and albums.

4. Went Down To See The Gypsy - One of my favourite tracks on the album that describes his meeting with a gypsy who saw the future, and a song that is again very laid back and relaxing.

5. Winterlude - A strange little track that seems to be a continuation of some of the tracks from Self Portait

6. If Dogs Run Free - One of the songs that to me seems to be tottering on the edge of brilliance, but in soem respects is ruined by some strange backing female vocals that i personally am not fond of.

7. New Morning - The title track to the album is vey upbeat and uplifting. To me it seems that this track defines this album as a new stage and era in his career.

8. Sign On The Window - I personally rather like this track, with a nice piano and voice that makes it seem very personal and touching at the same time.

9. One More Weekend - Another love song that seems to be ever so common at this stage in Dylan's career, although this is nice one and continues in the same feel as some of the other songs.

10. The Man In Me - Another song that could be seen as Dylan's own knowledge of th apparent change in style and him trying to put that across to the audience.

11. Three Angels - Although this song is just a basic description of what Dylan may have been looking at from his living room window, i rather like this track and the way it feels, and goes well with the final track.

12. Father Of Night - Another little ditty of a trakc that was apparently originally written as a movie track, and seems to share much in common with some of the tunes off Self Portrait.

Despite this album apparently being a quickly done album to try and counter some of the criticism of Self Portrait, this is a nice laid back album that is good to listen to when you're just sitting bakc and need to relax.

Summary: Good Album To Relax To
