Advantages: Heavier.

Disadvantages: Less tolerable.

The second release from Poland's Decapitated seems intent on being more brutal than its predecessor, and just like Behemoth and other bands obsessed with one-upmanship in the heaviness department, it suffers as a result. Whether the muddy production was intentional or not, the drums are far too foregrounded to afford any focus on the other instruments, and if you're not a fan of hearing drums pound away in various rhythms for thirty minutes, however talented and creative the young Vitek may be, it's going to count against it.

Sauron's deep vocals are now less audible than ever, but are only present out of necessity anyway, and I'm sure whatever Vogg's guitar is doing is quite exceptionally talented, but it bores the hell of out me with its stop-start rhythms and lack of anything substantial. Technical death metal is an obtrusive genre at the best of times, and Decapitated aren't the most skilled practitioners despite their comparative profile.

1. Perfect Dehumanisation (The Answer?)
2. Eternity Too Short
3. Mother War
4. Nihility (Anti-Human Manifesto)
5. Names
6. Spheres of Madness
7. Babylon's Pride
8. Symmetry of Zero

Summary: Decapitated's second album (2002).

I actually quite like the sound of drums pounding away for thirty minutes... That's just me though.
