In my opinion, Kurt Cobain was the last great rock star. Up there with Lennon, Elvis and Jagger (in his prime), Cobain really struck a chord with the general public, when he tragically committed suicide on April 4th, 1994. I myself don't see why many people were shocked at this. Cobain was never a happy person, even at the peak of fame, and one doesn't have to look further than his lyrics to find that beneath that rugged, grisly mountain-bear exterior was a tortured, shy man.
