Advantages: absolutely brilliant music sung by an amazing vocalist

Disadvantages: zero

Dear casual reader -

I beg and urge you to withdraw 15 measly pounds from your bank account, march into HMV and select the least-damaged copy of Dido's album. It will improve the quality of your life no end.

Please do not think that she is just a random female vocalist. I wouldn't do you the disservice of recommending you another Alanis Morrissette or Sheryl Crowe. Dido's unique voice will haunt you for hours after listening to her songs. There really is no other artist I can compare her to. Sinead O'Connor has been mentioned; Dido's songs will touch you more than Sineado's and will linger much longer than the cranberries.

Reader, I bet you've heard her sampled on Stan. Realise that Eminem built that entire (wonderful) track around her "Thank You" and thank her for two classic tracks. THe original song is even better than Stan and surprisingly is upbeat. The vocal line is beautiful with Dido's voice swooping in and out of high and low ranges. It's an uplifting song too with one of my new all-time favourite lyrics - "And I want to thank you for giving me one of the best days of my life". It's so simple and yet so heartfelt.

When you remove the CD from its wrapper and that annoying little magnetic tape thingy and slot it into your CD player you'll be hit with "Here With Me", the theme tune from Roswell High. This is a more "angry" song than Thank You, the accompaniment really brings this out and also allows Dido to show off another side to her amazing voice. This CD is great for chillout music or equally for listening to seriously.

A few album tracks that you shouldn't ignore in favour of the singles, reader dearest (funny how those words are almost anagrams isn't it?!) "Don't Think Of Me" is I think my favourite. It describes the pain of separation from a former lover and the realisation that he has moved on. "I
hear she's sweet, and so pretty...But when you see her sweet smile baby, don't think of me". The lyrics and Dido's remarkably malleable voice fit the song perfectly.

Phantom reader, do not miss out "My love's gone". This one reminds me of a folk song, telling a story of a girl (surprise surprise) whose lover has left her. Agin it's unbelievably good. One thing I must mention is how appropriate the instruments chosen are for the songs and how varied the styles are. In Thank You Irish celtic-u motifs can be heard while in Here With Me it's angry guitars.

I'll leave you to make your own decisions now in peace. Please don't forget the plea of a listener and writer haunted by a lovely album and doo her a favour by discovering Dido for yourself. Help Britain keep up with America; as usual, the Yanks got her first after our A & R men refused her a deal.

I really like this album, Hunter is probably my favourite song on it (and was long before it was released as a single) but I like just about every song. What's wrong with Alanis Morrissette though? :)

I haven't heard any eminem stuff, and don't intend to, than'yoo very mush! BUT - I have heard Here with Me on TOTP, and immediately thought - wow what a voice. A great review that has got me fondling that crispy tenner and thinking 'Oh yes, this will be mine!'
