No Love Lost - The Rifles
Advantages: Superb album, with great melodies and intense energy throughout, with a unique style + clever lyrics
Disadvantages: Generally expensive: £20+, unless bought at 7digital
The Rifles should be one of the biggest bands in the country. They are unknown to a criminal extent, and their high energy, melodic indie rock deserves more recognition. This debut album, No Love Lost, shows phenomenal potential, and is one of the best entrance's onto the British music scene since The Libertines exploded onto the scene. With similar media push, these guys would be just as big.
The Rifles produce little innovation on No Love Lost, but instead show a level of accomplishment to which most groups are still aspiring after three or four albums. Their sound is a blend of The Jam, clearly a heavy influence, with Weller-esque vocals, and modern indie rock groups, such as the aforementioned Libertines and the Arctic Monkeys. Every song is of a hugely energetic, fast paced style, and provide shrewd views on today's British lifestyle.
The album is a mix of both high tempo anthems and beautiful, slower acoustic songs. It is one of those rare creations with no filler tracks, although the standout songs are Local Boy, One Night Stand, Peace and Quiet, Spend A Lifetime and Robin Hood. Each of the eleven tracks, plus the hidden song, contain memorable melodies that will get stuck in your head all day, and the sometimes simplistic lyrics effectively convey the band's feelings on modern life.
My only criticism of the album is that it becomes slightly repetitive by the end, but because it is short and sweet, you don't get bored. It would have been nice to see some more variety from such a clearly talented band, but there's always time for that on future releases.
In all, then, No Love Lost is a thrilling debut from an already amazing band. It has boundless energy, beautiful, catchy melodies and insightful lyrics. The vocal style also helps set it apart from the waves of similar artists. The future certainly looks bright for The Rifles. If only their outstanding debut wasn't selling for £30...
I'm pleased to tell you that it needn't be. Visit 7digital, where you can get the album as an mp3 download for £7.99. Believe me, at that price, it's well worth it.
Summary: A fantastic debut album from a band that deserve to be far more popular than they are currently...
