A new Nick Cave album - so soon? I thought it must be a spoken word album, or an album of cover versions. But no, ten new songs. I'm intrigued. His last album was a disappointment of sorts. Tremendous songs, certainly, but overall it felt like the old goat was trying to hard. The ballads sounded overworked, self-consciously refined, and the rest sounded slightly jaded. A deeply moving album, but one which needed as much effort to listen to as it sounded like it took to make. 'Nocturama' by contrast sounds like it was written in an afternoon. There may be no commercial, chart topping friendly, short lived blooms here, but the Bad Seeds latest harvest is certainly rich with shade loving songs that should grace anyone's life long garden. Indeed all shades of life, death and love are here. None of Nick Cave's work can be rushed, his work is for a more patient type. His band's influences are as varied their style. This album swings effortlessly from the chaotic chordal rhythms of; 'Dead Man in my Bed', and 'Babe I'm on Fire', to the jazzy syncopations of 'Rock of Gibralter', and back to the familiar comfort of their Scott Walkeresque almost hymn like songs. ...
