I paid £9.70 for this album from Tesco. The price sounds like the name of the album doesn't it? Clever Tesco...

      Anyway...

This isn't the best of Now albums but it's still great for summer and great for parties. I think it's down to the RnB flavour of the album. I despise RnB music and it seems like the genre was popular at the time that this album was released. Around 70% of the album is RnB influenced. An example of this includes artists such as Estelle, Dizzee Rascal, Ne-Yo and Chris Brown. All these artists are poor, in my opinion, and the endless amount of RnB and cr*p lyrics lets this album down. There were bound to be better "hits" around at the time that this was released. Plus, the Now team have chosen to include Mint Royale's Singin' In The Rain down to the fact that it was heard in the diabolical show that is "Britain's Got Talent", NO THANK YOU.

The 2008 remix of Toca's Miracle finishes off CD2 but why include this? Hardly anyone bought this new "remix" due to the fact that YOU CAN'T BEAT THE ORIGINAL. Also, why have Now included boring Paul Weller on this? Does anyone actually know who he is? I don't and the song is dire.

I guess some people would enjoy this and like I said, it has a summery feel to it so I guess it'd be suitable to play at parties, BBQs e.t.c.

Not the best Now album in my opinion.

The 70th Now edition from Summer 2008

When I was about 11 or 12 and just discovering different types of music, the Now CDs were also on my birthday and Christmas lists. As a huge follower of the music charts and just a music geek in general, I loved the collection of all the biggest hits of the moment. The Now That's What I Call Music! series of course has been running since 1983 and the 73rd edition has just been released here in the UK. Of course the series has grown internationally with Now! Albums being released in Australia and America amongst other countries.

There are 3 Now! Releases every year. These come in Spring, Summer and Winter and each have a selection of the biggest hits from the three-four months in between the last release. Now 70, was the edition released in Summer 2008.

Perhaps one of the biggest sources of conflict about the CD is that it will only appease those people that are casual radio listeners and can identify a track from hearing the chorus or a few verses or some such. The genres of music featured on the CD and the diverse mixture of artists mean that it's very rare that one individual would like every track and you'd probably be better off downloading the ones you do enjoy than shelling out the price of 2 normal CD albums for this double disc collection.

Now 70 kicks off with Estelle's huge Number 1 'American Boy. Propelled to success by the fact it features Kanye West, it was one of my most hated songs from last year and not really a good start. The Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris collaboration is much stronger. It has a very sleazy feel to it and is shockingly catchy.

I am perplexed as to why Mint Royale's 'Singing In The Rain' makes the CD. OK it's a great track but it's three years old at this point and it's ridiculous to be included just because it was on 'Britain's Got Talent' and the sheep buying public propelled it to Number 1 because of this.

The majority of the first CD is dedicated to the more feel good pop tracks with the amazing 'Black & Gold' by Sam Sparro, 'In My Arms' by Kylie Minogue and the ridiculously structured and lyrical cheese fest that is 'That's Not My Name' by the Ting Tings.

For girlband fans there's 'Denial' from the Sugababes, a very slow and infectious pop number that has a very retro feel to it and the slinky and seductive 'Can't Speak French' by Girls Aloud. An interesting track that has dance elements but stands miles apart from their usual material and is drenched in a rather aged, disco beat.

There's also the batch of overhyped and over played female singers such as Duffy with the gorgeous ballad 'Warwick Avenue', Sara Bareilles and her slightly odd, yet catchy 'Love Song' and the annoyingly, irritating 'Sweet About Me' by Gabriella Cilmi. Her vocals have a very raw edge to them like she's trying to impersonate Amy Winehouse and the song just grates on you from the moment it starts.

The end of the CD sees residency given to the latest crop of indie bands though there's nothing inventive or interesting on offer. Over played and bland tracks from The Feeling and Scouting For Girls and a very bizarre, yet amazing song called 'Propane Nightmares' by Pendulum. It's a whirling infectious of dark and moody drums and an amazing hook that bathes in the glory of the dance genre.

The second CD also has it's fair share of hits and misses. This is the more RnB/Dance orientated side of Now 70. I dislike a lot of the songs on this CD though there are some that I don't mind like Rihanna's 'Take A Bow'. It's a different style for the singer, a piano led ballad that sees her vocals actually shining rather than sounding awful.

There's also the amazing 'No Air' from American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. The emotion and depth to this stunning ballad just pulls me in everytime. It's a true masterpiece from start to finish with both Jordin and the song's other half Chris Brown pushing their vocals to the limit to capture the essence of the track. Chris Brown appears again on his own hit 'Forever', whilst Usher, Mariah Carey and our very own Leona Lewis also feature. The laughable part is Will.I.Am's 'Heartbreaker' being credited as featuring Cheryl Cole. The fact she sings the same line over and over throughout and terribly at that always makes me chuckle. [Pointless bint]. 'I Can Be' by Taio Cruz on the other hand, is a very uplifting track though it's beat reminds me of something from 'The Lion King'...

For dance fans there's nothing but mainstream, generic dance on offer here like Scooter, Basshunter and Wiley though the CD does stick September's 'Cry For You' right at the end of the tracklisting. One of the best songs of last year, it has Euro Pop stamped all over it.

In conclusion, I have much better Now! CDs than Now 70. It was released during a weak time for new music and that is reflected in the poor choice of songs added to the tracklist. It won't feed your music needs if you don't like mainstream music as things like metal and hard rock are very overlooked, but if you're a fan of casual, radio friendly tracks then this double CD is definitely for you. Relive some of Summer 2008's finer moments and rest assured that there's something for everyone included here.

The complete tracklisting is courtersy of Wikipedia as it would've taken me forever to type out by hand!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        hmmm not bad

I have reviewed a few of the Now albums on here to date and this one is one of the newer ones, though they may have well just called it 'Number Ones,' for I counted six number one songs on here. To me, that seems like a ploy to make the album look amazing, but in doing this, smaller chart hits are overlooked. There are 43 tracks in total on here

        Highlights:

Sam Sparro looks set to be a one hit wonder. 'Black And Gold' is a new age synth pop workout, with sultry vocals and a brilliantly catchy chorus. Stylish and sassy, it is a solid start to the album.

I find Duffy very boring. 'Warwick Avenue' is all very depressing and gloomy, her voice grates more than a cheese grater and you just wish she would hurry up and get to this blooming Warwick Avenue so that the song can end.

Gabriella Cilmi's catlike vocals on 'Sweet About Me' are painful, but the song is very lively and she gets stuck in the head. Even more yucky is the Jonas Brothers doing 'SOS' which is aimed firmly at teenage girls called Hayley, whose lives revolve around Hannah Montana, comparing new lipstick shades from the Boots Number 7 range and 'pashing' with Lee on the back of the school bus.

I headed to the second disc, where the delights of Scooter got me dancing and leaping around. Basshunter churns out a disappointing second single with a by the numbers riff and vocals which sound uber processed. I preferred Ultrabeat's short and sweet 'Discolights' which is frantic and dancey.

On disc two, be sure to avoid Rihanna's 'Take A Bow.' The song takes the word 'tedious' to new and exciting levels. You can count how many beats there are in the whole song on one hand...yes it is that slow.

Overall though, a good mix of pop and dance, despite a reliance on massive hits. I would have welcomed some smaller chart hits like Glasvegas to add a certain je ne sais quois, which I have probably spelt wrong.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Overall a really good compilation

The series of 'Now That's What I Call Music' albums are a brilliant idea. Started in the 1970s, they gather a selection of the top hits, usually no.1 hits, together in one album for commercial appeal, for those who love them to be able to gather them all in one double album format. Each album is recognised individually by its numbering, and usually commonly known by dropping the middle words, eg. Now 25, Now 36, etc.

Now 70 was released last year, and features some incredibly good tracks. However, as is often the case, these are not always to everyone's taste, and thus some are less popular than others. The 2 disc album features some instantly recognisable music, as well as some tracks that I knew but couldn't put an artist or track title to.

The first disc has a good combination of powerful song ballads, ranging from Duffy's Warwick Avenue to the haunting and catchy sounds of Coldplay's Violet Hill. Also worth a mention is the smash hit single from Disney's latest music favourites, teenage brothers Jonas Brothers with their track S.O.S. Two of my other favourite tracks from this disc are Sam Sparro's Black & Gold, which was a huge hit and reminds me of last Summer, and Scouting for Girls and the track 'Heartbeat', an uplifting tune. The combination of the songs on this disc is very effective.

The second disc was a littel disappointing. The 'Now' tradition tends to be to make the first disc more commercial with chart music, the second disc with a more upbeat dancy theme, perhaps with some lesser known chart music and more cult and specific tracks. As a result, perhaps it is a lack of familiarity with all of the tracks, although some, such as the amazing No Air from Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown, and The Script's We Cry, are favourites of mine. However, a remix of Toca's Miracle seems almost out of place on there, and I wasn't a fan of the Will.I.Am and Cheryl Cole collaboration Heartbreaker, although I understand its appeal.

Overall, it's a decent 2-disc 'Now' album. As we progress through the years, there seems to be a wider selection of music to choose from for the 'Now' albums, and the standards have risen with each one. This one is decent for the most part, with only a couple of tracks that I wasn't fond of. I give this one a thumbs up. The track listing is available from this dooyoo listing if you want to have a look. It's worth a buy, this one, and is currently available from amazon.co.uk for £11.98.

70th CD! can you believe it?

Can't believe that a coupleof years ago i had a copy of Now thats what i call music volume 40, this is edition 70 - unbelieable. The tracklistig of this is phenomenal and it's planned just exavlty to match everyone's taste and cater for everyone's music needs. 70 editions of this and this is honestly one of the best I like these complimations becuase i am the sort of person who gets an album and only really listens to one song. I dont really buy these often and i do sometimes disagree with the tracklistings and in rebelling i end up making my own complimation and 10 times out 10 it works out better for me. I would say i like 80% of the songs on here, and don't care about the other 20%

Now has amazinging succesfull. This album was no expect just under 240k people baught it in the first week of release. Excellent cover art, really modern, stands out is fun and a perfect christmas gift. My fave's are Cant Speak French from the brillant Girls Aloud of course, and Cheryl's Hearbtraker deserves it place on here, i think Duffy is good one here, so is Gabriella Cilmi, Kylie's song is good, Sugababes deserve their place on here, but also Coldplay are on here and onas Brothers a ainternational band. There is big voice ballads from Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, Mariah Carey - songs for people who like r n b suh as Timbaland, Britney Spears and the right selection of rock music as well such as from The Hoosiers and The Kooks etc

It's a good complimations, except it's one of the better tracklists NOW have done but sometimes i just prefer making my own complimation, this has the biggest tracks of the year, but then again why pay 14 pounds fora 2cd of this when you could go on Itunes purchase 20 songs for 79p each and then make your own complimation disk. These are successful but i predict in a couple of years people won't care anymore...but how well has this series done - I WANT A BOXSET Plllllllease, even i'd be tempted! make it happen Universal. Right amount of pop, hip hop, rock music and r n b style stuff - Brillant ;) but i could do it better ;)

better cds out there then this album

What the hell is going on with the now cds they are all getting rubbish it use to be a religion of mine when a new now cd came out i would buy it but now im like i wouldnt waste my money .
Out of all the 40 songs i only like 10 all the rest is either rubbish songs or bands ive never heard of there is never any rock songs on that are in the charts and there is no imagination when it comes to creating a cd cover as there all tend to be the same design .
Ive even noticed that they are bringing more now cds out more frequant where as it us to be 2 a year its now like 3 or 4 a year .
To sum it up i think there is better albums out there to spend your money on

Great CD I always buy them all.

Wow, these CD's are great I'm not old enough to remember Now 1, but I have got most of them and they just keep getting better and better.
On Now 70 there are some great tracks such as: American Boy, Warwick Avenue, Closer, No Air, Better in Time and Low.
Altogether there are 43 track and are a great mix of the almost latest songs.
Just about all of the CD's come with 2 discs and a great cover to suit that time of year, or just something fascinating.

I think these make great presents and only cost around £15 when they first come out and now, Now 70 cost around £10 to buy in the shops.

If you have the older ones you aught to keep collecting them to make the set, as they could soon we worth a bit with them all together.

The only thing is with the Now collection is that they wait for enough tracks for the CD, and then them songs can be a little out dated. So if you want the songs as soon as they come out, you will need their single.

I recieved this CD as a birthday present but had been wanting it since it was released on July 21st 2008. I am a lover of the Now series of disks and was hoping for a good one after what was a disapointing Now 69 CD for me.

The first CD is typically 'Now' in that it has a wide variety of the latest chart music with a mix of R&B thrown in as well. The second CD is a mix of both R&B and typically for now again, the second CD has a lot more dance music than the first.

This is one of the first Nows for a while that has had a variety of songs that mean that I can listen to the CD's through without the need to skip 'Rubbish' tracks. Maybe there is a lot of good music around at the moment? Either that or the Now brand has just selected music that I like but most of the popular bands and artists are here to be appreciated. Scouting for Girls, Rihanna, Jordin Sparks, Duffy, Ne-yo, Basshunter and Britney to name a few. There really is something for everyone meaning it's great for background music either in the car or with friends and does this as well as it giving entertainment on a personal level at home or on your MP3 player.

Typically of Now's latest CD covers, there are ringtones of many of the songs that can be requested via text message inside the cover and when using the cd, you can access a VIP area related to the CD which enables you to view videos, star interviews and live performances for which you need the original CD to unlock.

When you look at these couple of extras along with the hits from many of the top artists this CD looks very good value for money. For someone who likes compilations this is a must, especially if like me you often only like the big hits on albums, particularly from the Dance and R&B artists. This CD is a ready made playlist and there are more people who will like this CD than dislike.

The greatest music line up ever, all the latest songs on just 2 cds, excellent. The latest "now" CD has to be one of the best as it has a wide mixture of music for all, it has a lot of awesome recent songs and a few outstanding songs from the past, this cd has something for everyone. This CD is a joy to listen to, there is a great mix of tunes that can fit in to any occasion or mood you are in.
Plus you dont have to pay alot to get this amazing CD, as it is selling for £12.62 in tesco, maybe lower now !! I am sure that many of you may remember the winner of Britans got talent, Gorge sampson, his winning performance song is also on this very CD. Also on disc two, track 15, You Wot, this is a very popular song with the younger generation, and all the ravers around the world.

                  a decent album

                  Now 70! - Various Artists

With myself being an avid Now fan, as soon as this album was released I wanted it. The album consists of around 40 songs which are spread over 2 disks.

The album itself has a variety of music, most of which are R&B, dance and pop. There are a few love songs on this album. Now 70 tends to lack songs by the newly popular bands i.e. Razorlight however it does have a few songs from bands such as Coldplay and Scouting for Girls.

Mt favourite songs on the album are:

                  Sarah Barellis - Love Song
Sam Sparro - Black and Gold
                  Riahanna - Take a bow

Some people may like the variety of songs and artists on this cd however I do believe that they are a little bit limited.

                  Disadvantages

                  Now 70, released July 2008

This is the latest in the "Now Series" released July 2008. Each year approximately 4 Now compilation albums are released. The CD consists of 2 Discs each with 21-22 tracks on each. Approximate price is £11.99 online or £14.99 in the high street stores equating to £0.27 - £0.34 a spmg, almost a third cheaper than the download song prices on the net.

Now 70 is a really good mix of songs from all the genres including Pop, Rock, Dance, and R&B. There is something for everyone and includes songs released within the past three months or so and also some songs that are in the charts when the CD is released.

CD1 is a good mix of pop and indie tunes whilst CD2 veers more towards the Dance and R&B tunes so you have a choice on the type of music you want to listen to. Songs from Rihanna, Girls Aloud, Kylie are alongside indie bands such as Scouting for Girls, The Feeling and The Hoosiers to name a few.

Whether you a dedicated "Now Series" buyer or whether this is the first Now album you have bought it is a really good CD to have a "snapshot" of the music from 2008.

Buy online, download online or buy in store. The cheapest option would be to either buy the album on-line (if you like the majority of the songs) or download the certain songs from the album that are your favourites.
