Advantages: Humorous, whether intentionally or not!
Disadvantages: Some tracks seem like a mish-mash of guitar & drums
Being in a band, and as a general music fan, I seem to like most genre's - Rap, Rock, Metal, Easy Listening... it all does it for me. But before I get into this review, I have to admit that i'm generally not a fan of 'black metal' - a genre that Cradle of Filth neatly fits into. (Actually, Cradle has a slightly cleaner and easier listening sound than black-metal, so lets just say 'Extreme-Rock').
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with this style of music, it's just that I find the whole ethos of hardcore vampyric rock quite amusing. In fact, I don't know how seriously Cradle of Filth take themselves, as when I went to see them in Portsmouth a few years back, the show was hilarous. "All the way from the AIDS ridden streets of Ipswich..." was the bands intro.
Seeing as it's Halloween i've decided to review 'Nymphetamine', Cradle of Filth's sixth studio album, which I purchased as a bit of research before I saw them live.
There are some decent tracks on the album, which opens with
"Satyriasis" - a series of eerie chants which are probably summoning the Devil or something equally daft.
Another noteworthy number is the ridiculously titled "Gilded C***", which is a good track, although it's not one to play in front of the elderly - in fact none of the tracks on this album are! There's a great guitar riff which is very catchy, and some ridiculously heavy drumming.
"Nemesis" is a bit of an epic at over seven minutes in length - It opens slowly, and picks up to a steady pace by the middle. It's again entertaining stuff, and a decent listen.
The rest of the album features many quirkily titled tracks including "Coffin Fodder", "Absinthe With Faust", and "Mother of Abominations".
Overall, 'Nymphetamine' is a pretty decent album, which served as an introduction to black metal for me. If you don't take it too seriously, it can be very entertaining, but it does features some great music and exciting guitar riffs. The album was nominated in 2005 for a grammy in the 'best metal performance' category, and deservedly so.
I'm awarding Nymphetamine three stars, not because I don't like it, but because it's not a genre I can fully relate to.
P.s, check out Cradle's cover version of 'Temptation' if you want a safe and entertaining - but fairly lame intro into the bands sound.
Summary: Unexpectedly Pretty Decent

One i recall is Nymphetamine in my opinion an amazing song!
And the other being called Hallowed be thy name. Also another great song, cant understand a word they say though in that. |
