The album holds a significance not found in much of his 80's work, yet it hasn't dated well, & subsequently doesn't hold up to his best work from the 60's & 70's, it is also a weaker collection than 1997's 'Time Out of Mind' - easily his best record since 'Blood on the Tracks'. The front cover resembles that of a low budget jazz release, yet the tone is quite dark from th...more

Premium Review Oh Mercy - Bob Dylan: Good 80's Dylan (198 words)

Hailed by many as one of Dylan's finest latter day albums, I've always found this album never quite lived up to the hype. The Daniel Lanois production is a little too slick & doesn't quite compliment Dylan's style. I am probably going to show my age with this review of Bob Dylan's album, but I don't care. I have been in the listening public since the beginning of this guy's legendary career and it is probably my age that allows me to write what I feel to be a balanced review of what I feel to be the best album that Bob Dylan ever made. Hiding behind a cover that looks somewhat dated is an album that really is not, and that is still believeable and very real even after more than 15 years since its release. Never judge a book by its cover, as this would mean you would miss out on a little piece of musical history that is indeed under rated. Commercially, Bob has ...  Read the complete review

I don’t know whether it is just me or is Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy album quite hard to get hold of? I heard a few of the songs on it at my uncle’s house years ago and thought I would just to have the album. So I stole it. No I didn’t really, I scoured the shops until I found it. My musical tastes are very broad but only a handful of songs really get the hairs on my neck standing on end. When I find songs that have this effect I’ll buy the artist’s album, last album, album before that, and album before that. In fact I sometimes end up with their whole discography. Bob Dylan has this effect with many of the songs on his ...  Read the complete review
