Hailed by many as one of Dylan's finest latter day albums, I've always found this album never quite lived up to the hype. The Daniel Lanois production is a little too slick & doesn't quite compliment Dylan's style. It's still a strong collection of songs, with 'Man in the Long Black Coat' & 'Everything Is Broken' proving specific highlights. In 1989 the production likely gave this a cutting edge sound, but today it sounds a little clean for Dylan. The album holds a significance not found in much of his 80's work, yet it hasn't dated well, & subsequently doesn't hold up to his best work from the 60's & 70's, it is also a weaker ... I heard a few of the songs on it at my uncle’s house years ago and thought I would just to have the album. So I stole it. No I didn’t really, I scoured the shops until I found it. My musical tastes are very broad but only a handful of songs really get the hairs on my neck standing on end. When I find songs that have this effect I’ll buy the artist’s album, last album, album before that, and album before that. In fact I sometimes end up with their whole discography. Bob Dylan has this effect with many of the songs on his ... Read the complete review
