Advantages: tracks 1 - 12
Disadvantages: fitter happier?
There is only one 'word' to describe this album - out-of-this-world. After Pablo Honey, one of the best debut albums ever, many people wondered how Radiohead could better it, but they did just that with the Bends. Though the Bends was amazing, and is one of my favourite albums, I believe they even bettered it when they produced OK computer, in my opinion the greatest album of all time. From the very first song, Airbag, through the middle, to the ending song, the Tourist, it is filled with genius, supplied mainly by Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood. The first track, Airbag is a triumphant entrance to an almighty album, and it’s followed by the divine Paranoid Android. Everyone who has heard this song will now how great it is. With brilliant music, excellent lyrics and truly amazing vocals from Yorke, this song blows me away every time I hear it. One of the best songs ever, easily. Other great songs include the wonderful Exit music (for a film), Karma police, No surprises and the divine Lucky. Although every song is brilliant, Fitter Happier is a puzzler. The 1984-esque dialogue is not really a song, more of a recording. Apart from that the album cannot be faulted. The songs are often about Thom Yorke’s personal ideals and experiences and Airbag and Lucky are about his morbid fear of car and plane crashes, indeed death itself. This album can seem quite claustrophobic at times but if you listen to it about 4 times then you will really begin to appreciate its brilliance. If you don’t, you probably just have bad taste in music. Don’t worry, it’s a common ailment and can be rectified by listening to the Bends or OK computer 15 times in a row. Tracklist: 1) Airbag (stunning opener) 2) Paranoid android (the best, nuff said) 3) Subterranean Homesick Alien (great, well worth a listen) 4) Exit Music (for a film) (ditto as above) 5) Let Down (so mellow, not for the depressed) 6) Karma Police
(excellent) 7) Fitter Happier (watch out for this one) 8) Electioneering (uplifting) 9) Climbing up the Walls (claustrophobic) 10) No Surprises (amazing) 11) Lucky (5 minutes of pure genius) 12) The Tourist (not as good an ending as Street Spirit, but good enough) I hope I have enlightened you a bit and hope you will make an effort to listen to this masterpiece of modern music if you haven’t heard it before. Goodbye.

- 24/03/01 Yeah I agree 'Fitter Happier' is a strange one and would have probably fitted more happily on 'Kid A', if you get my drift. |
