Advantages: Amazing songs, Crazy lyrics, Outstanding guitar
Disadvantages: None!!
Breathtaking, stunning and sheer genius; that is this album in a nutshell. Haunting melodies, beautiful lyrics, screeching guitar and pulsating drums make this not only Radiohead's greatest album, but a vital addition to any record collection. Let's begin, shall we? Airbag mixes one of the best choruses on the album with Thom's vocals and forms one of the catchiest songs on the album. Sadly for this song, it is often flipped past to reach the mind-boggling genius of... Paranoid Android. 6 minutes, 23 seconds and 37 milliseconds of the greatest music EVER made. With a host of different styles on show, this has been compared to Stairway To Heaven. On my list of favourite songs, it would rank far higher than the Stairway. Using crazy lyrics, outstanding vocals, wailing guitar and tremendous drums, this is as close to perfect as a song gets. Subterranean Homesick Alien has stirring background guitar and again makes the most of Thom's outstanding voice. Which tracks on this album don't?! Cool noises reverberate, slightly like those of Kid A (possibly Radiohead giving us a sign of what's to come!). Exit Music is possibly Radiohead's most depressing and dark song, starting with light acoustic guitar and echoing lyrics. It then bursts into life with great backup choir voices. Tremendous drums leading to the chorus and great lyrics, including the famous line "We hope that you choke, that you choke". Well Radiohead, despite the insult, we hope you all live long and make more bangin' tunes like this one. Let Down has taken a fair amount of stick over the years but I'm going to completely ignore all that negative energy and tell you what a good track it is. With a nice, soothing chorus and light guitar this ain't half-bad. Yes, it is the worst song on the album, but that just shows the overall strength of the album. Karma Police does what so many so-called "rock"
; bands (like Limp Bizkit. GRRRR!) try to do nowadays, which is sound menacing while still remaining an outstanding song. Having said that, this sounds nothing like Limp Bizkit, thankfully. It is soulful, has great backup vocals and lyrics that are hard to beat. Fitter Happier is quite disturbing at first, but I guarantee you will know at least the first six lines after a week of owning this. Funny lyrics, but if listened to for too long it starts to sound like the dreaded Sunscreen song. If I hear that song one more time I'm gonna scream! Electioneering then takes over, leaving the last song a distant memory. It grabs you by the hair and shoves you into a blender of Radiohead greatness and by God, you come out smiling. If you don't, you should be arrested by the Karma Police. Stunning. A deep, soulful song, with mourning lyrics from Thom especially on the melancholy chorus, greets you next. We call this stage in the Radiohead experience Climbing Up The Walls and it calls for a compulsory 4.45-minute silence. It'll have you in tears. Gobsmackingly good. No Surprise gives you exactly that, a no-nonsense song with a light background track and vocals. A rock-solid Radiohead hit, with an extremely strange video but that's Radiohead for you. Lucky is probably my second favourite track on this album after Paranoid Android. With slow verse and THAT exploding chorus with huge guitar and devastating vocals, this is one mighty song. Particularly good live, I might add. The Tourist is not a bad track to end what is possibly the greatest album of the 90's (although Achtung Baby is up there). Slow vocals and slight guitar end this run through of a truly magnificent album. So, this trip through Radiohead Heaven is over. If you want to stay here permanently, and believe me, you do, then the choice is simple. Go buy the album. NOW! And remember, I'll be watching you till you get it. HEEEEEHHEEEE

- 19/08/01 Although depressing to some, it cannot be said that this album is not one of if not the best album to be released in the nineties, and in my mind, one of the greatest British bands to date.O yeah, and a good op as well. |
