This was the first of the Greatest Hits compilations which B Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music produced. When originally released it contained 20 tracks as a double album but although each side of the LP had 5 tracks the running time was as little as 16-17 minutes for a couple of sides. The later version of their greatest hits (the CD More Than This released in 1995) had a longer total running time on a single CD. Plus ca change. For me this album better defines the essence of good Roxy Music and, ergo, good Bryan Ferry. Don t get me wrong I like Bryan Ferry as a solo artist but for innovation and inventiveness he was at his best when with the musical influences of Phil ...

CD was insufficient to do the job properly. If my remarks in the first paragraph seem a little harsh, can I finish by saying that when I saw Bryan and band on stage in 1995, their repertoire was divided 50-50 between his newer ballads and the early, more up-tempo numbers. From the audience reaction, especially to an encore of 'Stick Together', it was evident which went down better! ...

In 1973 the news that B Bryan Ferry front man of everybody's favourite art school-pomp rock act, was recording a solo album of standards, came as a surprise. It seemed light years away from the surreal world of Roxy Music, but with hindsight, after following the rest of his career, it fitted into place long ago. Listening to it again almost 30 years later, it hasn't dated at all, mainly because he chose his songs with care and treated them by and large with respect though not reverence - there were a couple of humorous moments which we'll come to later.
