With his entire output basically revolving around westerns, it is interesting to note that Sergio Leone’s final directorial masterpiece was not a western, but instead a gangster film. Within the sphere of his small filmography of seven films that he fully directed, Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America stands as his most ambituous and personal film of them all. Taking its inspiration from Harry Grey’s autobiographical novel The Hoods, the project had interested Leone since the 1960s, but due to the difficulties of obtaining rights to the story, it took until the early 1980s to finally get permission to make the film.
