Advantages: 27 songs for a very good price, The best of the Beatles

Disadvantages: None

I wasn't really a Beatles fan until I was given this CD as a Christmas present.
The fact that it is 27 of their number one hits is:
a) The best of their work
b) Good value for money

Running down in chronological order, you can hear the improvement and expansion in the Beatles' style.
Starting with "Love Me Do", the 1962 hit, gets the album off to a good start, a happy, energetic opening song.
There are plenty of these sorts of songs - "I wanna hold your hand" and "A Hard Day's Night" etc.

Of course, it would be foolish to put on 27 fast, happy number one hits so there is a nice selection of slower ones. Some of these are "Yesterday" (1965) and the later hits "Let It Be" (1970) and "The long and winding road" (1970).

Also, the quirky and somewhat odd "Yellow Submarine" features. Complete with the strange sound effects, it's a classic.
Another notable track is "Eleanor Rigby", the song with harrowing lyrics and the piercing string accompaniment. Not one to be missed.
The vivacious "Lady Madonna" also features, this is a truly great song and easy to sing along to.

Naturally, "Hey Jude" is on this CD. The absolutely brilliant song which is about 7 minutes long. Working up from a gentle, swaying verse it soon erupts into the famous "na na na nanananaaa" bit. A fantastic song with a good melody.

These are just some of the songs on "1". The ones I think are the highlights. There are many more, the hits span eight years worth of music. The CD has a very good mixture of songs, with varying tempos, feelings and styles. This is a top combination for a very good record which I would recommend to anyone, especially fans.

I don't think that just because the songs were singles, they were neccessarily the best. In fact the strength of the Beatles is that a lot of their album tracks are far superior to their singles. Songs like Girl, Tomorrow Never Knows and A Day In The Life are probably better than all their singles and there are many other classics that are superior to the songs on this CD in the Beatles back catelogue.
