...Introduction...
Since Dave Grohl was the drummer in early nineties Grunge band Nirvana with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic he has been the lead singer and guitarist of the band Foo Fighters. Their first album "Foo Fighters" was released in 1995 and was their most similar to the music he performed in Nirvana. Over the following albums the band developed their sound and with 2002's release of One by One they had finally carved their best sound. Here is my review of that album One By One.
...Album Review...
1.) All My Life
This is one of the best singles they have released and is one of the most recognisable songs in the genre. A biting guitar intro with Grohls voice and then the drums from come pounding in from Taylor Hawkins. This is one of the biggest tracks they have done. A fantastic intro to the album.
2.) Low
This starts with pounding drums and some dirty guitars. Grohl shows off his voice to good effect. Not as good as the opening track here but still worth listening to all the way through. There are Some subtle backing guitar parts to listen out for.
3.) Have It all
This is not one of my favourites on the album but is a good track which has pounding drums and flowing guitar. It just fails to create that spark that their best tracks create. Still a good enough track though. It will have it's appeal.
4.) Times like these
Another great single, this starts with some fantastic integration between Bass and Electric Guitars and then the drums come in. This is the best song they have done of this type. It is less hard rock than the others and is more focused on the chorus.
5.) Disenchanted lullaby
This has a nice intro and is the softest track on the album and sounds a little like Soundgarden. A nice track with some nice guitar parts and Grohl's voice sounding emotive. The drumming adds a great deal to this track as it pounds away.
6.) Tired of you
This has an old school "All my life" slowed down intro and Dave's voice sounds really good which makes you wonder why he wasnt the vocalist of Nirvana instead of Kurt Cobain as there really is no contest vocally. A great mellow track.
7.) Halo
This is another mellow track with a nice guitar intro, the drums soon come in and then the bass. This is a flowing track with a nice feel. It is one of their best slower tracks and has some nice changeable drumming.
8.) Lonely as you
This is a fantastic ballad with a twangy guitar intro and Grohls passionate vocals. the dirty guitar soon comes in and then track takes a slight change. A very good track that is very well worked. Well done.
9.) Overdrive
This is another guitar led track with good drumming. This track is a very flowing one which has some nice parts to it but just doesnt have quite the spark that the best tracks on One By One have. Still good though.
10.) Burn Away
This is a nice ballad that integrates well behind the guitar and drums. It starts with each instrument having their part. The track changes tempo at different points and works really well. A Very fine effort all round.
11.) Comeback
Here we come to the final track and this is another track that sounds a little like Soundgarden. It has a nice guitar intro and some nice drumming. A good track to close out the album.
...Overalll...
One By One was the moment where they were taken to be a great band. Before they had success but nothing to compare to this album. This is their best album and it showed everyone they as well as the full on rock moments could do the rock ballads aswell. A significant change in the bands history.
Summary: Great

clownfoot - 07.05.08 Hold on! Are you trying to tell me that The Colour and the Shape and There's Nothing Left To Lose aren't great rock albums that made the Foo Fighters, and that Walking After You doesn't show they could do a rock ballad prior to One By One? |
