I'm not entirely sure why I bought Katy Perry's debut album One of the Boys. I think it was on special offer for £3 and I needed to spend a bit more to get some bonus Clubcard points. Anyway. The album was released in 2008 and did pretty well on the back of successful single I Kissed A Girl, which appears second on this album. The record as a whole revolves around bubblegum pop-rock, with fast beats and memorable choruses. Katy clearly has attitude which comes across in songs like If You Can Afford Me ("I don't put out for charity") and her debut single. Waking Up In Vegas sounds like the aftermath of a fun night out, while One of the Boys is about growing up and not wanting to be a tomboy any more - something her teenage fans will probably be able to relate to. Katy isn't the best singer ever, but the album does a good job of masking this, and she certainly has a distinctive and expressive voice through which her strong personality shines. Katy shows her vulnerable side in Thinking of You, a slower track that sounds like it came from an early Avril Lavigne album. Hot N Cold is a lot of fun, probably my favourite song on the album as it is uptempo and catchy without the annoyance factor of I Kissed A Girl. Lost and I'm Still Breathing are slower, more thoughtful tracks. The album closes with a 'rock mix' of I Kissed A Girl, which doesn't sound that much different to the original. Track Listing 1. One of the Boys 2. I Kissed a Girl 3. Waking Up in Vegas 4. Thinking of You 5. Mannequin 6. Ur So Gay 7. Hot N Cold 8. If You Can Afford Me 9. Lost 10. Self Inflicted 11. I'm Still Breathing 12. Fingerprints 13. I Kissed a Girl (Rock Mix) Overall, this album isn't bad but I would say it's definitely one for the younger music fan. Tweens probably love it but I don't think it has the same appeal for adults the way that Kelly Clarkson's or Christina Aguilera's music does. The overall vibe is quite childish, and songs like Ur So Gay and Mannequin seem more like playground taunts than anything else. For all her supposed controversy over girl-kissing and getting drunk, Katy (the daughter of two pastors) actually comes across as fairly harmless and wholesome. Still, she seems like fun and there are some decent songs on here, though I actually prefer her more recent releases, such as Firework.
If you like pop-rock then you'll like this album. This album is full of classic pop-rock tunes and features a mix of ballads and upbeat pop hits to get you dancing. There is not one bad song on this album and it can be enjoyed by the whole family. It is ideal to put on at parties or just to listen to in the car. This was Katy's debut album and for a debut album it's pretty impressive. Katy's vocals are spot on throughout and you can be sure that she hits the right note during EVERY song. The album features the singles I Kissed A Girl, Waking up in Vegas, Thinking of You, Hot and Cold and Ur so Gay. Ur so Gay was never released as a single in the UK as it was said to be offensive but I don't think it is. Katy doesn't mean anything about the song, it's just meant to be lighthearted fun, which it is. The whole album is lighthearted fun. It focuses on fun, relationships, friendship and break-ups. I really like this album. It lifts your mood and is easy to listen to. It doesn't go on for too long either so you never tire of it. I have never got bored of this album. I can play it over and over and it still sounds as fresh as the day that I bought it. I would recommend this album if you don't already have it. You can buy it for a cheap price now as it has been out for a while. A great debut album by Mrs Brand!
This may possibly be the most played CD I own. Having loved her big hits 'Hot n Cold', 'I kissed a Girl' etc I thought I'd give it a go and buy the debut CD. It was definately a good move. There is not a song on this CD I don't like, even my 57 year old mum will sing along with this! What's particularly good about the CD is the ability to go from a fast paced, loud track such as 'Waking up in Vegas' straight into the quiter, more serious 'Thinking of You' (my personal fave). There really is a great variety of tracks for different moods. Make sure you check out track 6, 'Ur So Gay', the lyrics are superb! No wonder Katy Perry has gone on to such success. This is a great song to sing along to in the car, sure to raise a smile at the traffic lights when other people see you tapping on the steering wheel singing about how you like to kiss other girls!
My boyfriend brough this CD home from Tesco's the other day after shelling out £5.00 on it. For a moment I thought he had flipped out, as he's heavily into EBM and dance music and I'm primarily into heavy metal. But determined to be open minded and always happy to hear new music, I sat and listened through the album to see what it had to offer. Katy Perry burst onto the music scene with the hugely popular track "I Kissed a Girl". This song absolutely did my head in, and still does even when I hear it now. It really grates on me and it was an obvious cheap trick to market her as an attractive new pop artist. However, it obviously worked like a charm as she's released several follow up hits that have stuck in the charts and is becoming more and more famous in her own right. I love the colourful art for this album. Katy's vintage styling is gorgeous and looks cute and classy. The Americana white picket fence and trashy decor gives a fun, retro feel. The sleeve insert includes full lyrics to all the songs. The album is mostly full of cheerful pop songs with a guitar based backing and silly lighthearted lyrics. It has a couple of breaks where the tone mellows out and becomes dreamy and reflective. I have tried my best not to take the lyrics seriously but they mostly strike me as ridiculous and often have to be rushed or stretched to fit the timing or rhyme sequence. Track listing: 1. "One of the Boys" - A slow start to the album, I think this none is bland and doesn't really kick the album off to a good start. For the title track of the album, this seems to be a plain old filler track and is a bit of a let down. 2. "I Kissed A Girl" - The track that made Katy Perry an overnight sensation. Cliched and silly, but has proved it has staying power. In always wonder if it's coincidental that the line "I kissed a girl and I like it" sounds so similar to "I kissed a girl and I like tit".... 3. "Waking Up In Vegas" - This is my favourite song from the album. It's fun, tells a quirky story and is insanely catchy. I heard this a lot when it was over all the music channels and in the charts, and it goes running through my head so I can't help but end up singing along to it! 4. "Thinking Of You" - I quite like this song. It's a slower paced love song about love and longing. Katy's vocals take on an almost country music feel to them and she gives the words a real twang that puts some heart into the theme of the song. 5. "Mannequin" - This track really doesn't work for me. The grungy guitars clash with the odd "elevator music" samples and love song lyrics. A bit of a mish mash that is a messy piece of work. 6. "Ur So Gay" - This is an attempt at a comical novelty song. Not my cup of tea at all, and the jazzy trumpets and whistling in the background are an odd combination given the modern topic of the song. 7. "Hot N Cold" - This is another hugely catchy song that had big success as a single. It's fun and girly, and is great for having a silly dance around to. We all know people who treat their relationships with a hot/cold attitude, and it's lyrics are very true to real life experiences. 8. "If You Can Afford Me" - An ok track with a fast-paced catchy chorus. Has a bit of a Kelly Clarkson feel about it. 9. "Lost" - This is a very slow song that seems to drag along and left me feeling bored. 10. "Self Inflicted" - This track takes a turn back and has more of a rock-y feel to it. A cutesy love song that has a bit of a harder edge to it thanks to the strong drums and guitars. 11. "I'm Still Breathing" - Another song, another change in tempo. This switching back from fast to slow over and over is getting a bit annoying! This spoils the flow of the album and the tracks seem to be all over the place and not ordered in a very logical way. This is a weak song that brings you on a downer for the end of the album. 12. "Fingerprints" - I'm getting that Kelly Clarkson feeling again! This is an alright song, but feels like an odd place to end. It's quite uplifting and fits in nicely with the rest of the material on the album. Bonus material: 13. "I Kissed A Girl" (rock mix) - This is a rocked up version of the single with heavier guitars and lots of distortion. It has a glam rock feel to it and is marginally better than the original version. 14. "I Kissed A Girl" (video) - Girls prancing round in their undies. Fits the song nicely. One of the Boys is currently available on Amazon.co.uk for just £2.49, which I think is a reasonable price for an average album. One of the better pop stars currently heading the scene but the songs are not particularly inspiring and most can easily be forgotten. This is the type of CD I can put on when doing the washing up and have a little sing along to. It doesn't attempt to strike out or be thought provoking, but is a fairly nice piece of pop music. I'm sure you all remember the whole ' I Kissed A Girl' thing' which introduced Katy Perry into the limelight back in 2008. I remember thinking 'what on earth is this new craze ?' and wondering who this new 'popstar' was. Of course , after a year or so , it had all sunk in ,and we have all got used to her , just like we have with Lady GAGA , although one Katy thing which I can't get used to is the fact that she has recently become engaged to British comic Russel Brand. Katy Perry , a twenty five year old Californian chick first introduced herself with her debut single 'I Kissed A Girl' in 2008. Soon after , followed the release of her debut album 'One Of The Boys'. The album was released in the United Kingdom on June 17th 2008. The album comes under the pop , pop/rock and electro pop genres. At just over forty minutes long , the album contains twelve tracks. This is album reached number eleven in the British album charts. One Of The Boys is available to buy from Amazon for a price of £4.98 which I think is a great price to pay for an album that was released last year! * Track List * 1.One Of The Boys 2. I Kissed A Girl 3.Waking Up In Vegas 4. Thinking Of You 5. Mannequin 6.Ur So Gay (Edited) 7. Hot N Cold 8. If You Can Afford Me 9.Lost (Edited) 10.Self Inflicted 11.I'm Still Breathing 12.Fingerprints After hearing 'I Kissed A Girl' , the Summer anthem of 2008 , I immediately became a fan of Katy Perry , and especially after hearing her single 'Hot n Cold'. She has the most catchiest songs ever! My favorite songs on the album are definetely the two above that I have mentioned as well as Mannequin , Fingerprints and Waking Up In Vegas. I really like her voice ; it's unique yet quite powerful and I think it really suits her songs. I couldn't imagine anyone else's voice suiting her songs. I also like her feisty attitude which comes through in her songs. I like the whole 'Girl Power' attitude and the girls vs boys thing she has going on. I like that Katy Perry has her own style and doesn't stick to the usual 'pop princess' kind of 'goody-two-shoes-ness' that usual stars stick to. She certainly isn't afraid to show or do what she thinks , and isn't afraid to do her own thing , which I think is great , because she's such an individual and it adds to the whole creative and artistic side of being a music artist. If you've loved her singles , then you'll love this! Thanks for reading! January 22nd 2010 xd-o-n-z-x (also posted on ciao under xdonzx)
One Of The Boys - Katy Perry Description: Genre: Rock - Pop Rock / Artist: Katy Perry You can currently buy this album for less that £10 from Amazon. I didn't have to pay anything though as I dropped several huge hints to Mr Siamese and he eventually gave it and bought it for me - result! Even if you are unsure of who Katy Perry is, chances are that you couldn't have avoided hearing the catchy "I kissed a girl (and I liked it)" because it was (and still is) played everywhere. And chances are that even if you didn't like it, you will have ended up catching yourself singing along to it! Perry has since released more catchy tunes and is also fast making a name for herself for the weird and wonderful outfits that she wears. There is something about her that is difficult to dislike, she is young, fun and her music makes me smile. Track list is as follows; 1. One of the Boys 2. I Kissed a Girl 3. Waking Up In Vegas 4. Thinking of You 5. Mannequin 6. Ur So Gay 7. Hot N Cold 8. If You Can Afford Me 9. Lost 10. Self Inflicted 11. I'M Still Breathing 12. Fingerprints I must admit that not all of this album was as up beat as I had expected, and at first, I wasn't sure that I liked all of the tracks. It is one of those albums that sneak up on you though and once you have listened to it a few times, you end up looking forward to songs that you didn't know that you liked. It is great for singing along to in the car or getting ready to to out and I like it!
Katy Perry- music video extra to superstar in no time whatsoever. Most people will not have realised that before she released her first single she appeared in the video for Gym Class Heroes- Cupid's Choke as the main love interest. Not long after this she released her first single 'I Kissed a Girl'. This song features on the album. The tracks- 1. One of the boys Song Analysis- This song is an up-tempo song about a girl who wants to be noticed as someone who is attractive to the opposite sex but because she acts like the boys they just see her as one of them. Favourite Lyric - I wanna be a flower, not a dirty weed I wanna smell like roses, not a baseball team 2. I Kissed a Girl Song Analysis - Another up-tempo song, the title says it all really it's about a girl kissing a girl! Experimenting if you like.. Favourite Lyric - It felt so wrong it felt so right Don't mean I'm in love tonight 3. Waking Up in Vegas Song Analysis - Again an up-tempo song like most of the songs on the album, although the first verse is a little slower and less up-tempo but seems to work really well never less. Favourite Lyric - I lost my fake ID But you lost the motel key Spare me your freakin' dirty looks now Don't blame me 4. Thinking of You Song Analysis- Thinking of you is a slower more emotional song about someone who is still thinking of an ex and wanting them back. This song really shows off Katy's powerful vocal talent. Favourite Lyric- 'Cause when I'm with him I am thinking of you Thinking of you, what you would do If you were the one who was spending the night Oh, I wish that I was looking into your, your eyes 5. Mannequin - Another up-tempo song. I find Katy Perry's voice to be a bit whiney on some parts of this song towards the beginning. I love the lyrics and concept though. It's about someone who seems to have no emotion whatsoever. Favourite lyric - You're not a man you're just a mannequin I wish you could feel that my love is real 6. Ur So Gay Song Analysis - This song is about a boy who's a bit girly so reminds me of my brother it probably shouldn't do since he's a cage fighter but when he lived at home he used to spend hours in front of a mirror getting ready so that's why. Another up-tempo song that's quite bouncy. Favourite lyric - You're so sad maybe you should buy a happy meal You're so skinny you should really supersize the deal 7. Hot n Cold Song Analysis - This song is about a lover that changes his mind a lot one minute things will be great with them and the next not so good. Another up-tempo song. Favourite Lyric- You change your mind like a girl changes clothes Yeah you PMS like a b*tch I would know 8. If You Can Afford Me Song Analysis- I LOVE this song it's my favourite song of the album. It's about not settling for a lover who doesn't love you or treat you right. Again as with most of the songs it is quite up-tempo. Favourite lyric- If you want me it takes more than a wink, more than a drink, more than you think 9. Lost Song Analysis- I personally think this is the least memorable song on the album. It's not that it's a bad song I just don't think it's anything too special. This one is a slower song with a slightly whiney tone to it. It's about feeling lost. Favourite Lyric- Is there a light is there a light at the end of the road I'm pushing everyone away cos I can't feel this anymore 10. Self Inflicted Song Analysis- Up-tempo song. Despite the seriousness sounding title it is actually quite a positive song. It's about someone getting hurt enjoying themselves but not caring about it because it's what they want to do and they're doing it with the one they love. Favourite Lyric - I can't stop don't care if I lose Baby you are the weapon I chose These wounds are self inflicted 11. I'm still breathing Song Analysis- This song is about someone who is suffering the effects of a breakup. Favourite Lyric - I'm still breathing But we're been dead for a while 12. Fingerprints Song Analysis - This song is about somebody trying their hardest to succeed and leave a mark on the world. Favourite Lyric- Voted most likely to end up on the back of a milk box drink Looks like I'm letting em down Cos 7.75 isn't worth an hour of my hard working time When you can't afford half the sh*t they advertise 13. Bonus Track - I Kissed a Girl (rock remix) Overall i think the album is really good value for money there's very few songs that i don't like that much. When i first bought the album i must have replayed it about 20 times a day.
If you're a fan of all the stuff Katy Perry has released so far, you might be tempted to hear a bit more by buying this her debut album. The big question though, does the rest of the album contain just as instantly catchy pop songs as we've heard from Katy so far? Well the answer to that is yes & no, the most catchy songs have to be "I Kissed A Girl", "Waking Up In Vegas" & "Hot N Cold" which of course have all been released as singles already. The only other instantly likeable track is the albums title track "One of The Boys" which would do well as a future single. As for the rest of the album, it's a grower, if you give it time & a few listens the songs will start to become likeable. There's a mixture of up tempo tracks & ballads but I think the tracks which Katy really peaks on are definelty the faster ones. I've had it in my car for quite a while and really like it and think it's a good pop album but then I would call myself a Katy Perry fan, so I would say this is definetly one for the fans!
Katy Perry. The sole reason that the majority of girls feel it's fine to kiss a girl. And it is. But due to the popstrel's debut single 'I Kissed A Girl' trivialising girl-on-girl action, and me being a lesbian, I tried to avoid liking Katy Perry. I failed. Aside from the debut single, the album is packed full of tongue-in cheek pop goodness, from the dancey Hot N cold, right through to a few slowies like Thinking Of You. Each song tells a story form Katy Perry's 24 years of experience, and I gotta say, it's an album a lot of girls (aged 16 or 60) will be able to relate to. The album really shows off the versatility of her voice, and is miles away from her debut gospel album, entitled Katy Hudson - the singer's given name. Overall, the album holds something for everyone and there's bound to be a bit of every girl's life in there somewhere, whether it's within the depths of Ur So Gay a more like the melancholy Lost. Play it on repeat and drift off to Katy Perry's beautiful voice.
If you asked whether I liked this album, I would have to say: Yes If you asked me why I liked it, I would have to say: I've got no idea! Although she is lovely to look at, Katy Perry's brand of bubbly pop music certainly doesn't appear on my musical radar - I like Metallica, Foo Fighters, Rise Against etc along with slightly more 'poppier' sounds like Pulp, Michael Jackson and people with genuinely stunning voices (Florence and the Machine) or groups whose music have the potential to take you on an emotional rollercoaster - yet I keep listening to One Of The Boys and, more disturbingly, enjoying it! Plus, as a 27 year old, married, father of one I'm pretty sure I'm not her target audience! We've all heard I Kissed A Girl by now (and I'm pretty sure we've all hummed it far too many times!) and like most first releases this is probably the catchiest song on the album, however other highlights include Waking Up In Vegas where her voice switches between sounding like Alanis Morissette doing acoustic, to Pink to someone else whose name I can't quite remember - possibly Avril Lavigne. There are also a couple of ballads such as Thinking Of You which prove that Katy Perry isn't just a pretty face and stunning figure, she can actually sing a note or 2. Although I'm pretty sure this CD is aimed at younger teeny boppers (God, I really am getting old if I'm using terms like that!!) or (according to my gay friend) gay men who love the 'kitsch factor' I would genuinely recommend this to anyone looking for a light hearted, fun album. Plus at £5.99 on HMV.com at the moment, even if you hate it you've not wasted a fortune.
So you have the rather bland and doll like Avril Lavigne, the feisty, yet do gooder that is Kelly Clarkson and the loud and brash P!nk all taking up space in the pop/rock camp so cue Katy Perry. With a profound stage presence that is usually down to her glamorous outfits and outrageous stunts the singer has created quite a stir since she became an internet sensation with the tongue in cheek 'Ur So Gay' back in 2007 and of course the worldwide smash hit 'I Kissed A Girl' which provoked as much negativity towards its gay orientated theme as it did sales especially considering Ms Perry's strict religious upbringing. With so much controversy surrounding her it was no wonder that she's made such a huge splash onto the pop scene and whilst she has the potential to roll out killer tunes, once the big fuss is over and her supposed girl smooching has faded away you're not left with a lot to wet your appetite on her debut album 'One Of The Boys', a record that is full of limp pop-rock moments that even her peers Avril and Kelly would be ashamed to call their own. The title track starts off proceedings here and immediately makes you wonder why on earth you have purchased this CD. Perry has this irritating knack of dragging out lyrics when she sings as if she's trying to make them stretch and fit the messy arrangement of a track. Its evident for the first time here and is notable on other tracks as well. It's a very poor styling of singing and doesn't showcase a lot of talent on her part. This track passes you by fairly quickly and then of course you stumble across the reason we all know her name the heartstopping 'I Kissed A Girl'. Produced by Dr Luke & Max Martin who have reams of hits to their name the track has an infectious beat and a huge rock bassline crawling behind it's more dance orientated beat. The chorus is brilliantly delivered by Katy as the relish at the controversy she is causing is apparent on almost every word she sings on this track. It's one of the best pop tracks of the decade and almost makes you scream out 'ONE HIT WONDER' on the spot though 'Hot N Cold' can easily give it a run for its money. With an even catchier beat and simple but effective lyrics the song worms its way into your conscience even faster than its predecessor and is proof that when Perry tries she can produce surefire hits in her sleep. 'Waking Up In Vegas' begins to showcase the more rock orientated style of the record and is a fairly run of the mill track. Perry's vocals are annoying but the beat is catchy enough for you not to really focus on them that much. The first proper ballad on the record is 'Thinking Of You'. Katy actually shines here delivering a really vulnerable track that is outlined in her vocals. The lyrics are extremely cheesy though which is one of the reasons I don't really feel this track. 'you're like an Indian summer, in the middle of winter, you're like a hard candy with the surprise centre'. It's awful songwriting and just sounds awful when they roll off her tongue in the song. It's things like this and her messy vocals at times that ruin the majority of the songs on the album. 'Mannequin' does show she has a great seat of pipes on her when she gets going. The track is actually a faint replica of something you'd expect to hear from Paramore or another female fronted rock group. It's an OK track but lacks any spark to make me want to listen to it again. 'Ur So Gay' is another song that generated a lot of publicity for the singer as many believed it to be about Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, who Perry was briefly linked to. Unlike 'I Kissed A Girl' however, this track is disappointing with a more laid back vibe to it but it just doesn't grab you and the attempt to be controversial by using the term 'gay' as a negative statement is so last decade galpal. The rest of the album sort of blends into one huge headache with poorly constructed ballads and loosely developed pop-rock offerings. Perry's vocals are nice on 'Lost', taking on an almost haunting edge though apart from 'Self Inflicted', there's nothing else that merits any mention. 'Self Inflicted' is a brilliant slice of pop-rock that actually is catchy and also brilliantly structured. All the negative points that feature on a lot of 'One of The Boys' earlier tracks are forgotten here and the result is something edgy and deep that stands out from the rest of the album. Depending on which version of the album you purchase and whether or not you nab it physically or digitally you can get various other tracks and extras. I got a rock remix of 'I Kissed A Girl' that ruins the original masterpiece in all honesty... Katy Perry has proven that when she actually focuses she can create excellent pop music and its tunes like 'Hot N Cold' and 'I Kissed A Girl' that are needed in huge amounts on her next record if she wants to have a successful career. A lot of the tracks here are lazy and she seems to have built her career around one or two huge songs. The writing is at times very cheesy and dull and doesn't leave a lot to the listener's imagination whilst Perry's vocals change tone and such so often that it can be very irritating on the ears. I'd suggest downloading the four main singles and forgetting about exploring the rest of Katy Perry's world unless of course you see the album cheap enough somewhere and have money to burn... A complete tracklist is below for those who wish for such things: 01 - One of The Boys 02 - I Kissed A Girl 03 - Waking Up In Vegas 04 - Thinking Of You 05 - Mannequin 06 - Ur So Gay 07 - Hot N Cold 08 - If You Can Afford Me 09 - Lost 10 - Self Inflicted 11 - I'm Still Breathing 12 - Fingerprints
I bought this album on the strength of the incredibly catchy, Max Martin produced ''I kissed a girl'' (who happened to have produced/co-wrote kelly clarkson's ''my life would suck...'' and also ''So What'' by P!nk) and was expecting an album full of similar infectious tracks. i was wrong. this is a prime example of record exec's catching 'Let's release the strongest song off the album first so the public don't know the rest is full of absolute dross' syndrome. well thanks Virgin for cheating me out of my hard earned £10. the problem doesn't lie solely of Perry's shoulders, her voice is substantial enough on CD (live however, she leaves ALOT to be desired, relying on cheeky outfits and banter other than her ability to sing/perform). The song's feel like they are Lindsay Lohan cast-off's they're that bad. luckily, her following singles have been her strongest songs (with the exception of 'waking up in Vegas' - a mediocre pop/rock song about being hungover, but just sounding like a loud bore) obviously a lot of people will disagree with me - i'm ready for the fallout - as she's sold buckets of this both sides of the atlantic. best tracks, are obviously 'I Kissed a girl (and i Liked it) with its infectious synth beats which complement Perry's lower tones perfectly, and i'm also quite partial to a couple of her slower songs such as 'Lost' and 'I'm Still Breathing' which again suit her voice to a T as they don't require much range, and the lyric is surprisingly strong. I absolutely hate 'Thinking of You' and 'Self Inflicted' - these are merely standard rock songs which wouldn't be out of place on a Jonas Bro's CD or the wretched Miley.... Tracks like 'Hot 'n' Cold' and 'One of the Boys' sound like they were written by a 9 year old: "you're in then you're out / you're up then you're down''. =S I do think the lyrics of official first single Ur So Gay are quite clever and one of this albums saving grace, so props to Perry and Greg Wells for that. For some one who has been cleverly marketed to cause a bit of mild controversy, its disappointing to see the rest of her debut album is, well, boring. i do feel this is a definite missed opportunity on Virgin's part, and after the success of her first singles waivers, it's hard to see where they can keep the Perry train going to. Track by Track One of the Boys - uptempo rock song, wouldn't sound out of place at the end of the 90's I Kissed a Girl - Great hook, smooth purring vocals, perfect pop song Waking up in Vegas - Mediocre loud mess Thinking of You - Mediocre quiet mess Mannequinn - forgettable album filler. poss worst track UR So Gay - guitar lead song, some great pop culture lyrics Hot n Cold - cringeworthy, but also rather catchy. if you can afford me - another album filler lost - a ballad, suited to Perry's limited range perfectly Self inflicted - again another filler - sounds like it should be on the beverly hills soundtrack or something. Im Still breathing - Similar to 'Lost' - great vocal delivery and decent lyric Fingerprints - an ok rock song to end the album on. If your reading this seeking advice on buying the album, DON'T - save your money and purchase either 'All I Ever Wanted' by Kelly Clarkson, or 'Funhouse' by P!nk. In future i'd like to see Perry either deliver an album of stonkers like 'IKAG' or follow a more acoustic route and develop her song writing, as there's definite potential. I'm off to sing along to a Lindsay Lohan CD. hahahahaha. oh and a musical treat, heres an example of Perry's recent live performance on american idol, make your own judgement! http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9a2vq_waking-up-in-vegas-ai-live_webcam
Katy perry is a big star of today. This pop rock album is fun, well recorded and well presented and cant go wrong. My favourite track of the album is the smash hit ' I kissed a girl', which is really catchy and easy to sing along to, like all the other songs on the album. Other highlights of the album are tracks like: 'One of the boys', 'Waking up in Vegas', 'Ur so gay' and of course 'Hot n Cold' This album is a feel good album that improves and grows on me evrytime i listen to it and never gets boring, no matter how many times you listen to it. Katy Perry herself has a good, clear strong voice and is a definite one to watch. The tracks on the album are cool and edgy, as are the lyrics to the songs and i find it hard to fault the album, What you may not like are the down-tempo songs that definitely feel like a let down compared to her up-temp songs
**THE ARTIST** Katy Perry (real name Katheryn Hudson) is an American singer/songwriter/musician from California. Singing has been a big part of her life for many years and despite only recently hitting the mainstream she has been performing for most of her life and already had one album under her belt before the release of 'One Of The Boys'. She rose to fame last year with the release of the two controversial hits "Ur So Gay" (which she states is NOT about being homophobic) and of course, the very well known, "I Kissed A Girl". She has won awards, most recently a BRIT award for Best International Female Artist. Well deserved I say! So far she has released two studio albums: Katy Hudson (2001) One Of The Boys (2008) **TRACKLIST** 1. One of the Boys (4:07) 2. I Kissed a Girl (2:59) 3. Waking Up In Vegas (3:19) 4. Thinking of You (4:06) 5. Mannequin (3:17) 6. Ur So Gay (3:37) 7. Hot N Cold (3:40) 8. If You Can Afford Me (3:18) 9. Lost (4:15) 10. Self Inflicted (3:25) 11. I'm Still Breathing (3:48) 12. Fingerprints (3:44) **MY FAVOURITE TRACKS** **2. I Kissed A Girl** I couldn't write a review of Katy Perry's album without giving this song a mention! It is the track that made Katy shoot to stardom in the UK and many other places, it is the first track that I'd heard by this artist and I loved it. It can be quite annoying when I hear it now because I, as I'm sure most of you, have heard it far too often! It's still a good song though. The thing that first attracted me to this song was the lyrics because they are so daring, not many artists these days would be willing to sing about this sort of thing because the reaction could go only two ways, it could be well received and everyone could love it, or everyone could hate it and that wouldn't be a good was to star a career! Luckily for Katy, she has a brilliant voice and is hugely talented and this song was one of the best songs to come from 2008 in my opinion! It's a very up beat, tongue in cheek song with a chorus that you'll never forget! My favourite lyrics from this track are: "This was never the way I planned, not my intention, I got so brave drink in hand, lost my discretion, it's not what I'm used to, just want to try you on, I'm curious for you, caught my attention". 9/10 **4. Thinking Of You** This is Katy Perry's latest single to be released from 'One Of The Boys'. It is poles apart from the last two singles, and one that Katy wrote on her own in her apartment. Her last two singles have been very up beat, energetic and sarcastic but this is a serious, emotional ballad. I have to say that I like it better when she performs it live with just her and an acoustic guitar because it sounds amazing, she has such a brilliant voice! I think that it is about being in a relationship but knowing that deep down you're still not over the person you really love and you wish it was them instead. It's a fantastic song, a very different, more vulnerable side of Katy. My favourite lyrics from this track are: "You're the best, and yes, I do regret, how could I let myself let you go, now, now the lesson's learned, I touched it, I was burned, oh, I think you should know!" 9/10. **7. Hot N Cold** This song was the second to be released from 'One Of The Boys' and was a great follow up to "I Kissed A Girl". Again, Katy is back with the sarcasm and up-beat angst that makes her music so unique. It is fairly clear what the song is about, at least I think so anyway. I thin that it is about being in a relationship where the other person is up and down, doesn't make their feelings clear, we've all had a relationship like that I'm sure! It's a great song, again, with a fantastic catch chorus. My favourite lyrics from this song are: "Someone call the doctor, got a case of love bipolar, stuck on a rollercoaster, I cant get off this ride, you change your mind like a girl changes clothes". 10/10. **MY OVERALL OPINION** I love this album. When I first heard "I Kissed A Girl", Katy already had me hooked into buying this album just because of that song! I was expecting more of the same pop rock sort of stuff but I was pleasantly surprised by the eclectic mixture of styles, moods and lyrics. I think that she is a very talented musician and I will definitely be looking out for her next album. If you like artists such as P!nk then I would give this album a try, you wont be disappointed! Thanks for reading!
Katy Perry is the buzz girl in the music business at the moment. There is so much hype about her, good and bad and this is one of the reasons why I decided to buy her debut album, One of the boys. Add to that the fact that she won Best New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards and Best International Female Artist at the 2009 BRIT Awards I was quite excited to listen to the album. What I love about Katy is that she has a really kooky, unconventional style and just seems like a very fun girl. She has a very fun sense of dress and some of her stage costumes that she wears are really glittery and exciting and I would love to have the opportunity to wear something like that. She is also quite controversial as well which I think is always good when it comes to a recording artist. She grew up in quite a strict household, her parents were pastors and was not allowed to listen to mainstream music, just gospel music, so when she releases songs entitles, "I kissed a girl" and "ur so gay" she was always going to court controversy. The last song especially, with religious and gay leaders being not too please with the conurtations of the words. Katy Perry's real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson and she was born on 25th October 1984. She is an American recording artist. To me her music is very catchy and pop like and definitely something you really sing along too. Most of her songs tend to have quite catchy lyrics and it's usually about boys and relationships, issues like that. I think the album probably appeals to a younger audience but is quite upbeat and fun and perfect if you want something for the CD player to keep you in a cheery, bright mood. I find most of the songs on the album quite fast paced and full off quick, witty lyrics that you learn quickly and love singing along with. Like I said, One of the Boys is her debut album and was released on 17th June 2008. As of February 2009, the album has sold over 800,000 copies in the United States. The album has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Her breakthrough single was the very fun, very catchy, "I kissed a Girl." In it she basically sings about kissing a girl, that it felt wrong and right at the same time and if her boyfriend would approve or not. This single was released on May 6th 2008 and reached number one in America where it stayed for seven weeks and has since topped the charts in over 20 countries including the United Kingdom. Another song to look out for on the album and one of my favourites is "Hot N Cold", a fun song that has lots of contradictory lyrics and is a good tune. The rest of the album is as follows: 1. I kissed a girl 2. Waking up in Vegas 3. Thinking of you 4. Mannequin 5. Ur so Gay 6. Hot N Cold 7. If you can afford me 8. Lost 9. Self Inflicted 10. I'm still breathing 11. Fingerprints And a bonus track of I Kissed a Girl, the rock version. The album cover features a photo of Katy lounging on a sun lounger in short shorts and a cut off top with a big floppy hat, looking as kooky as ever. Behind her is a white picket fence and the CD itself has a big print of a strawberry on it. The insert inside the CD lists all the words to her songs. I really like it when they do that so you can sing along or attempt to learn the words. It also has a few other photos of Katy in there too. All in all, definitely a fun album that I would definitely recommend.
