Kings of Leon are three brothers and a cousin, this album is probably their best known taking them away from folk-blues roots and into a more mainstream poppy arena.
The album is mixed between nods to their older material and more popular music, stand out tracks are obviously 'Sex on Fire', 'Use Somebody' and for me '17', the rest of the album is well performed and this album points them towards a path filled with adoration and riches.
The album begins with Closer, a song which takes away from their acoustic background and is filled with heavy production and synths, it is bassy and worth repeated listens.
This is followed by Crawl a heavy, breathy song where Caleb Followill's voice is drowned out by the beats, this isn't one of their best songs and sounds like it should be on a Strokes album, but nonetheless it is good to hear them try new things.
Sex on Fire was one of the most popular songs about 2 years ago, it became a karaoke and X Factor classic which is both a blessing (popularity) and a curse (credibility), the song is raw, sexy and rocky and is all the things that are good about this band, excellent song really holds your attention to the end and probably the star of the album.
This is followed by, Use Somebody, another strong track, it has a great chorus and the band are tight in their playing together, rocky with a touch of folk to it, this is excellent music and the kind of thing they do best.
Manhattan is a good song, Caleb really hits all the notes here and it is a more subtle and thoughtful song with the focus on vocals, lyrics and mood. An excellent song which showcases all of the bands talents and makes the albums middle its core of creativity.
Revelry, is another more acoustic song, just Caleb and guitar, its thoughtful without being pretentious and for me sums this band up, they know where they came from and this shines through some of the more pop-orientated music.
I really enjoy the song 17, it is vocally excellent has a strong chorus and is nicely played out, its well paced, folky and fun from beginning to end. Strong instruments, twangy vocals a great song.
Notion is fine, it doesn't fit as well as the previous 4 songs, and signals a slight weakening of material, the lyrics are good, the singing whole hearted but it struggles to match up.
I want you has more of a seattle sound to it, its good to hear experimentation and whilst it doesn't fully work, I'd rather that than 12 copies of the same song.
Be Somebody - This is another classic, one of the most popular Kings of Leon songs, its moody, builds brilliantly and offers a gritty, sexy musical landscape, a classic tune. Bass heavy, vocally strong, this is what the band are all about and deliver with aplomb.
Cold Desert builds up instrumentally until Caleb joins in, this is an excellent song, the band play so well , doing what they do best, tight musical arrangements with excellent vocals.
Overall I would say this is the best produced Kings of Leon Album, it has 5 stand out tunes, it still isn't my favourite of their albums, as I preferred their original sound, but they have raised their game to become international artists with this album, it is moody, well written, tightly arranged and musically excellent.
This is the album that will bring them to the popular music fore and it has, richly deserved they now have to wrestle with whether they want to be an anthem band or continue to be too cool for school and play how they want to play.
I've read reviews comparing them with Pink or Katy Perry, this is unfair simply because they are played on popular music channels I still think their music is folk rock pop with a real undercore of folk, they have the age and ability to be one of the great bands of our time, their live performances suggest on their day they can be yet on others, they simply can't be bothered.
Hopefully with experience and a desire to remain true to themselves they can mix this excellent style of music with their more bluesy original stuff a la White Stripes and keep everyone happy.
An excellent album well worth £3.99, this is a great way to get into the Kings of Leon, but please also listen to 'Youth and Young Manhood' which really is something special too and might influence you to enjoy their music even more.

Only By the Night was the fourth album by American brothers (and cousin) Kings of Leon, and the album that really propelled them into the mainstream, mostly because of widely-played single Sex On Fire. I'll be honest and admit I had never heard Kings of Leon before and bought this album on the strength of that single and the subsequent ballad, Use Somebody.
3. Sex On Fire
4. Use Somebody
9. I Want You
10. Be Somebody
11. Cold Desert
I was worried that I wouldn't like the rest of the album - it's happened before that I've bought an album on the strength of one or two songs and found that those songs were the only ones I actually enjoyed. I needn't have worried though. I still like those two singles best. Sex On Fire is a brilliant rock song, full of raw energy. I'm not usually a fan of pop ballads, but I quite like rock ballads as I often find the guitar riffs and rawer vocals tone down any soppiness, and Use Somebody is a fantastic example of this. However, the other songs on the album are also brilliant. I particularly like the opening two tracks: Closer and Crawl are really strong tracks and I also like the laid-back Manhattan and Revelry and the closing ballad Cold Desert.
Some people who've been Kings of Leon fans for years were angry with them for this album, accusing them of selling out. I guess I'm one of those new 'bandwagon-jumping' fans, but I genuinely love this album and in fact liked it so much I went out and bought all the band's other albums as well. So there!
Kings of Leon are literally a family band consisting of the three Followill brothers and their cousin who is another Followill. For some reason they are a kind of mix between Coldplay and Nirvana, the genre is a fusion of classic rock and modern indie and the coarse voice in the songs adds emotion and brings their songs to life.
==What the Fans think==
Kings of Leon have been around for many years (since 1999) but only got attention in mid 2008 with the release of the iconic song 'Sex on Fire.'They failed to woo the crowd last week at the 'V Festival' whilst performing lesser known tracks but the the crowd was well and truly set on fire with their 2 clichéd but brilliant songs. Unfortunately I have come to realise that 'Use Somebody was a track which not only everyone overplayed but I myself kept on repeat and listened to over and over again until I ruined the song for myself.
Kings of Leon were fated to release a beautiful number 'Use Somebody' after their catchy and original song 'Sex on Fire' hit the charts. NME claim that 'Use Somebody' was nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song, winning the last three. It was well received here in the UK remaining top of the charts for six consecutive weeks. Many made covers for this song including 'Pixie Lott, Trey Songz and Brooke white.' And while all this was happening TV talent shows did not fail in young hopefuls attempting to become the next Caleb Followill. Use somebody was certainly song of the year and every Indie boy, every emo, every rocker, everybody, literally everybody had this song and its catchy lyrics stuck in their head while at work, while driving, in the shower and everyone was singing it. Many references were made by comedians such as 'Michael Mcintyre', it was featured on many hit shows such as hollyoaks. NME praised the song as "easily the best 80s power ballad of 2008."
==Memories while I have 'been roaming around'==
I remember taking drives constantly listening to this song on repeat whilst on holiday. Such a sentimental song couldn't have come at a better time. I had just broken up with my girlfriend (*cries*) and I was feeling sad and could have 'used somebody.' But for some reason this song didn't make me feel sad or sorry for myself it gave me hope and lifted my spirit. I remember shortly after my break-up their were hopes of new prospects. After being my first date with this girl I was driving her home and Use Somebody starting playing on the radio. It was fate. I thought to myself now or never and I kissed her and the best feeling was she started kissing me back the exact moment Caleb says 'I hope it's gonna make you notice...someone like me.' I couldn't remember a happier memory of this song. Then I started listening to my old favourite while I retired Use Somebody ...'She Will Be Loved.'
==Painted faces fill the places I can't reach==
The lyrics of this song are very complicated and hard to understand. But basically the song is one I can relate to. Perhaps one night stands and ladies of the night were not enough for the song writer. He sees all the 'painted faces' and people in good relationships a place where he cant reach. But then all of a sudden he meets a woman who makes him want to chill out and try the girlfriend thing. I mean meaningless one night stands are nothing compared to a meaningful relationship you have with a girl. 'Looking down and all I see'...he's sad to see all the relationships and it has a despressing effect on him. 'Notice someone like me'...I mean this is self explanatory when he actually meets someone he likes he wants them to notice him for who he is inside. Perhaps im dwelling too much into this song's meaning but im pretty sure Caleb did have his share of groupies.
==You know that I could use this CD?==
If you haven't heard this song you were buried underground in 2009. It is an absolutely beautiful song which makes you smile and sing along when you listen to it. You should buy this CD because it is already a classic and a ballad adored by many. No wonder it won Song of the Year in 2009. If you haven't heard it it's a must. It's one of those songs which will be stuck in your head and you will keep singing it involuntarily.

Kings of Leon are an American Rock band which formed in 1999 in Franklin, Tennessee. The band is a family unit made up of three brothers and their cousin. The band made it in the UK before making it in their home country (United States). Only By the Night is their fourth album, released in September 2009 which entered the UK album chart at number one and remained there for one more week and also had two single week stints as the UK number one album. The album consists of 11 songs, some more well known than others for example the hit record Sex on Fire. First came 'Youth and Young Manhood' in the UK in July 2003, next was 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' in October 2004, then 'Because of the Times' in April 2007. The band is currently working on a fifth album.
The band Members
Anthony Caleb Followill - lead singer/rhythm guitar.
Ivan Nathan Followill - Drums/Percussion/Bcking Vocals.
Michael Jared Followill - Bass/Backing Vocals.
Cameron Matthew Followill - Lead guitar/Backing Vocals.
All members are known by their second names.
The cover is a deep green colour. The album art is pretty difficult to work out from afar but once you look closely you can see that a face is being made up of one part of each of the members faces mixed in with a bird. Somewhat unusual, yet intriguing at the same time. The album title 'Only by the Night' is written in very small writing at the top left hand side of the cover, making it rather difficult to find if you don't know what you're looking for.
3. Sex on Fire (reached number 1 in UK chart)
4. Use somebody (reached number 2 in UK chart)
6. Revelry (reached number 29 in UK chart)
8. Notion (reached number 107 in UK chart)
9. I want you
10. Be somebody
11. Cold desert
All songs were written by the band and produced by Angelo and Jacquire King.
'Closer' is a personal favourite of mine and a brilliant song to kick off this album. It immediately makes you want to listen to more of the album. The intro of the song has a slight creepy sound. One of the more slower songs on the album.
'Sex on Fire' is probably Kings of Leon's most popular song. A VERY catchy song and one that I never get tired of. This song is always played in clubs I've been too and never fails to get everyone singing and dancing! A fantastic song that will definitely be remembered in years to come I'm sure. If you haven't heard it you really need to listen to this!
'Use somebody' is another well known Kings of Leon song. Personally I think Use somebody is the song on the album with the best lyrics. One you definitely will want to sing along to. You really get to hear how good Caleb's voice is in this song.
I absolutely love this album! It's up there in my top 5 favourite albums of my album collection. There is not one song on this album that I don't like. All of the songs are well written and is it actually possible to fall in love with somebody's voice? Because I think I have... Caleb's voice is outstanding! This album is one of those ones that you will never get tired of and after listening to it you get the songs stuck in your head and find yourself singing along. Don't be put off by the 'rock band' stereotype, Kings of Leon produce fantastic music that appeals to all ages and both males and females. I have recommended this album to my friends and I am recommending it here to you.
You can buy this album from Amazon for £3.99 with free delivery. An absolute bargain in my opinion! GO BUY IT NOW! HAA I'm positive you won't be disappointed.
Hope you like this review, thanks for reading, please rate/comment :)
Nay-sayers might say that this is an album by the Kings of Leon that made them break away from their usual sound in order to appeal to the masses. To an extent, that may be true. But isn't it a move that is bold and should be appreciated by all? I mean just a few years ago, no one on God's Green Earth knew who these four boys from Tennessee were and in such a short time they have become a worldwide phenomenon.
But back to the album:
It starts off with a bang in "Closer." This is a track that I certainly didn't think would be as good as it is, and the fact that it's the first song of the album gives the listener the immediate impression that the Kings of Leon are starting off with a bang because they are not going anywhere.
"Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" are two songs that I'm sure you've heard by now (unless you've been living underneath a rock for the last year and a half). So I won't even begin to discuss those.
"Revelry" and "Manhattan" show a much softer side to the Kings of Leon. This is a softer side that really hasn't been shown before by them, and it's nice to see that they have a sentimental side to their hearts while still staying true to their rock-heavy roots.
"17" keeps the playfulness that this band always seems to have in their music. It also shows that they're still young and have the ability to make songs are good, but have a comedic aspect to them that no one expects.
Finally, "Cold Desert" shows that the last songs on their records have this feel to them of both epic and magnetic proportions.
You can definitely believe the hype about this band and on this record. The Kings are here to stay and establish their kingdom beyond just Leon.
Kings Of Leon, Only by the Night
This is one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite bands. In this review I will try to tell you as much as I can about both the album and the band, to help you learn more about both, and to help you make the best buying decision.
Who are the Kings of Leon?
The Kings of Leon are an orginal, unique, alternative rock band from Tennesse. The band is made up of three brothers and their cousin, and they named their band 'Leon', as it is the name of both their grandfather and their father.
The singer is called Kaleb (I think this is how you spell it). He is a really unique distingable voice. I think he is a really good, powerful singer.
You can watch many of the Kings of Leons videos online. Their offical website is: www.kingsofleon.com. You can also find them on YouTube.
Songs you may have heard by Kings of Leon are: 'Charmer' (She's such a charmer oh no. Owww!),' Use Somebody' (You know that I could use somebody, someone like you.)
You're most likely to hear some of their songs on Radio 1.
How did I get the album?
I first heard the song 'Sex on Fire' on Radio1, ages ago and couldn't get it out of my head. I kept singing it all the time, 'Woooooaaaahhh! Your sex is on firrrreee!!'
A few weeks after I heard the song 'Use somebody', and liked this song just as much. I researched a little into who the Kings of Leon were, as I hadn't really heard many of their songs before, I had recognised the band name though, and on YouTube I found one of their old songs, which is called 'On Call' which I thought I had heard before. The whole band have had haircuts since this song which I why I didn't recognise them on the music channels. After their haircuts they are a really good looking band as well as having some fantastic songs.
Christmas was coming up so I ask if I could get their album.
When I got the album I listened to it straight away on Christmas day and unlike with most albums which when I listen to them too much they get boring after a while, I still listen to this one all the time now. I loved all the songs the first time I heard them and still think they are great now.
Almost everyone I know loves the Kings of Leon, they're a truly fantastic, unique and orignal band.
Songs on the album
As you will notice in Specific Criteria I have rated the Quality and consistency of tracks as flawless. This is because I have enjoyed listening to all the songs on the album and think they are all really good tracks.
01 Closer (3:57)
This is a really good first song to start the album off. It sounds really creepy and is a really good tune, everyone will love it! If you want to hear some of these songs before you decide to buy the album you can listen to them on sites such as youtube.com. I think the best words to describe this song are chilling and slightly creepy. When you listen to it you image it to be set in a dark place, like a haunted forest somewhere.
02 Crawl (4:07)
03 Sex on Fire (3:25)
My favourite song of all time by Kings of Leon, Sex on fire is an amazing song, its really catchy and people of all genders and ages love it. To me this song is the highlight of the album. The single reached number one in the charts in the UK, Australia, Finland and Ireland.
When I heard it for the first time I had no idea who sang it. I thought whoever was singing it has a really good voice and I still think this now. This is one of my favourite songs ever and it sounds great on my big speakers with the volume turned right up. I recently had it on at a party and everyone was loving it.
04 Use Somebody (3:52)
This is a really catchy tune with great lyrics. It reached number two in the charts in the UK. When you listen to it you feel like either singing along if you are that kind of person or if you are in a good mood, or when its finished you get it stuck it your head and you either want to listen to it again or can't get it out of your head.
Most people I know love this song, when it first came out I remember everyone was singing it in school.
05 Manhattan (3:24)
06 Revelry (3:22)
This was the third single released from the album, on 2nd March 2009. It's a really orginal song and sounds really unique compared to most songs out in the charts at the moment. It is another great song by the Kinds of Leon.
07 17 (3:07)
This song is really, really good. In my opinion it should have been released as a single. Like most of the Kings of Leon's songs, its original and different, but absolutely amazing.
08 Notion (3:01)
This was the fourth single released from the album, on 29th June 2009. It is another really good, catchy song and I really enjoy listening to it. Again, this is a really original and unique song and I have never heard any other song which sounds like it.
09 I Want You (5:05)
10 Be Somebody (3:48)
11 Cold Desert (5:37)
What Have Other People Said About the Album?
I asked a few other people who have listened to the album before what their opinions on it are. Here is what they have said:
"I enjoyed most of the songs on this album, especially 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use Somebody'. I like the voice of the singer." - My sister, 13
"They're an amazing band who never fail to impress. I love all their songs from this album and listen to it all the time!" My friend, 16
I have also researched online what critics have said about the album, and copied a few varied reports below.
Their reviews were mainly positive, which isn't surprising. Here is what they have said, according to
You can also read the rest of the reviews and others through the link above.
Delusions of Adequacy
It's a tight, very good album and although it'll have its unfair share of detractors, like the rest of the band's albums, it will shine no matter what
When Caleb evokes God's wrath on the "crucified U.S.A." or describes lost-highway lonelines, the batter-fried U2 atmospherics and portentous Dixiefied grunge makes his worry as real as Brimstone.
Much of Only By the Night is unmistakably the work of a band making music with arenas in mind. Sometimes it's intriguing.
For the most part the record is a sluggish mess of sweeping guitars and stoner-rock sounds, not unlike what you might hear at a high school talent show.
Throughout Only by the Night, frontman Caleb Followill wails forlornly about cheap thrills and true love while his two brothers (and a cousin) bashâEuro¨ out spooky, raw-edged riffs that rarely go where you expect them to.
I have compared some online prices to help you get the album for the cheapest deal. All prices are correct for Saturday 27th June.
At the moment you can buy the album on HMV.co.uk for £6.99 with free delivery, which I think is pretty good considering how good the album is.
On play.com the album is £7.99 with free delivery.
On Zavvi.co.uk it is £8.95 with free delivery.
You can probably also get a cheaper deal for this album on auction sites such as eBay or Amazon.
In Specific Criteria I have rated this CD as excellent value for money. This is because it doesn't cost as much as some CDs out there, and it is definitely better than many other albums out there. I don't think I will ever want to throw this album away.
Do I recommend the album?
Yes! I definitely recommend the album as it is truly unique and I love listening to it. The Kings Of Leon are a great band and almost everyone enjoys listening to their music. In my opinion you'd be mad not to enjoy their music.
If you still aren't sure about buying the album I recommend listening to their songs on YouTuvve
Hope my review of Kings of Leon - Only by the Night is helpful to you. x
Only by the Night is without question one of my favourite album purchases ever. When i first brought it i listened to it from start to finish without getting bored, and a year on, i still am still listening to every song.
You'll only have to have heard Sex on Fire (and who hasn't?) to understand what a distintive and brilliant sound the Kings of Leon have. Even though the song is pretty much unavoidable, along with Use Somebody, it is still brilliant.
Personally, i dont think they are the best the album has to offer, songs in particular to listen to (for me anyway) are, closer (very eerie but catchy), I want you and Be somebody, but i could really list the entire album without a second thought.
Their take on rock/pop is refreshing and distinctive, not repetitive like many bands around today.
If you do like this album then also look into their previous albums, of which there are a few!
And if you get the chance they are also brilliant live. Enjoy!
Isn't it ironic when possibly the worst album by a band becomes their 'best selling album?' This album, Only by the night, the one that catapulted KOL into Us and Uk stardom, the one that gave them the Number One? Its really not as brilliant as what everyone is making out.
I may sound like a cynic, I've been told I only don't like them now because suddenly they've become famous. Not true. I don't like them because they've become sell outs, and they're new stuff could have been written by anyone, performed by anyone, and because of this like by anyone. This is not a bad thing, if you want these kind of fans, whho only know the singles, only go to your gigs to sing the 'sex on fire and 'use somebody' straight back at you. But other than these (admitedly quite good) singles, the rest is just filler, bland pop rock meant to fill stadiums and sell.
What happened to the old Kings of Leon?
What happened to all the songs that all the songs that the true fans want? Spiral Staircase or Four Kicks?
Unlike some newer fans, who have probably never heard of Molly's chambers or The Bucket, I just want the old Kings of Leon back, I used to love them!
Only by the Night is the 4th Album from the Kings of Leon and seemed to catapult them to a more main stream audience. Most people will recognise 'Sex on Fire' or 'Use Somebody' from radio air time but for me the best song on the album is the first, 'closer', which is closely followed by the second 'Crawl'. To me these are more representative of the Kings of Leon sound of old. I eaglerly awaited the release of this record and although it is good, I must admit I was disappointed. To me its not a patch on 'Because Of The Times' which is the third album that they released. I have been a fan of Kings of Leon since the first album and to me 'Only by the Night' is more commercial and mainstream than their previous work, so die hard fans don't get to excited but if you're new to Kings of Leon its a great album to introduce you to their style.
To a lot of people, Only By The Night is the first they have heard of Kings of Leon. What a perfect album to shoot them into the limelight. It is certainly a 'chill out' album, the meaningful lyrics and gentle guitar riffs make it suitable for anytime of the day. Caleb's voice is truly one in a million, this is what makes Kings of Leon so good, they sound different so the majority of rock music today.
The album opens with a catchy beat in 'closer' and closes with a similar style song 'Cold desert' in between are sing-along anthems such as Sex on Fire, Use Somebody and Notion. It is hard to pick a fault in this album, but if i had to it would be one for old Kings of Leon fans, meaning that it is extremely different to their previous work. So warning, for those who are inspired by this
album to purchase their earlier music, be warned that it is significantly different from Only By the Night, but still as fantastic. You will not be disappointed by this album, it is a gem.
If you are interested in looking at their older music, the titles are.. (from oldest to newest)
- Youth and Young Manhood
- Aha Shake Heartbreak
- Because Of The Times
- Only By The Night
The latest album from the followill brothers sees a progression and development from their previous albums that had been orientated towards garage rock to more of a stadium sized sound. The album includes the massive hit single 'Sex on Fire' and other hit single 'Need Somebody' As mentioned, the album does has a big sound that seems ideal for playing in stadiums, in fact, in some ways it is reminiscint of earlier u2 albums, with its echoing guitars and rattling, pounding drums.
In their singer Caleb, the Kings of Leon have a truly unique voice to give their songs an extra edge. The problem with this album and their previous ones is that his lyrics and the events they describe are quite hollow. This is such a shame as his voice is perfect for describing the highs and lows of life but unfortunately with Kings of Leon every song seems to revolve around drinking and girls. Still, for a lot of people this is fine and in Only By The Night, the brothers (and cousin) have got the routine down pat with maybe their best album yet.
This is the album that made them Kings. With over 2 million copies sold, it's their biggest selling album yet. Its been in the charts for months on end, and its made them THE band of 2008.
But is this as good as it is credited to be?
Well, te album features hauntingly beautiful lyrics, for example in the slurred tones of Cold Desert: "Here's to you, here's to me/On to us, nobody knows/Nobody sees, nobody but me", and the melodies are slowly drawn out in riveting, sometimes disturbing lines. This is definately the brother's most thoughtful album. Perfect for the walk home after a night out.
However, it lacks the crunching guitars and howling vocals in their previous albums, Because of the Times and Aha Shake Heartbreak. Out goes the dancing riffs of "My Party" and the wild screams of "Charmer". The song "Sex on Fire" is the most energetic that you'd find from this album. Though beautifully made, and still retaining the Kings of Leon's signature vocals and guitars, previous fans may find this a little too mellow compared to the King's previous works.
After hearing nothing but rave reviews about this album from pretty much everyone I know I thought Id give it a listen (even though this isnt really my type of music) and tell everyone what I thought about it, and now Ive become another huge fan!!
So much so I even went out and brought their previous albums just to see if they were as good. Only By The Night is the fourth studio album by the american rock band The Kings Of Leon the album since it has been released has been number 1 in 10 countries and has even won two Brit Awards, the two tracks from the album that have already been released were absolutley amazing hits and "Sex On Fire" reached number and and "Use Somebody" hit the second spot. This is their highest selling album out of the four and they have just got better and better every time, I hope they keep on making music for many more years to come.
I like them because they just sound so different and unique to anyone else that I have ever heard anyway they dont follow the musical rowd and that makes them stand out, their lyrics and songs are just fantastic and even people who dont usually like their style of music will like this!!
The tracks on the album include ones I have previously mentioned that we have all heard such as "Sex On Fire" & "Use Somebody" which have already been released as singles, did amazingly well and have tunes to them which make you just want to hear them over again! My personal favourite song from the album would have to be "Revelry" I just love the lyrics of that song especially the first few lines, take a listen to it and you will se what I mean, it also has such a lovely beat and tune to it makes me relaxed and great to just chill out to, as is the whole album.
Price & Stockists:
So judging by those sites you should be able to get it from any of them online or in store at HMV for about £8 or less, you will get so much use out of that £8 though you will wonder why it wasnt more expensive!!
Also posed to Ciao under the name sexybeest :) x
I wasn't really a Kings of Leon fan until I saw them live at Glastonbury in 2008 & was just blown away. They were amazing and put on a really good live show with an electric atomsphere.
So this is there forth & probably most commercial album to date. This is due largely to the success of "Sex On Fire" which topped the UK charts last year & has now become abit of an anthem. Follow up singles "Use Somebody" & "Reverly" are also featured. But apart from these singles, the album features many amazing moments including the brilliant "Closer". I would even go as far as seeing that there isn't really one bad song on this album.
They are very distinctive in what they do & that's why I think it makes them an essential listen. Lead singer Caleb's vocals are better than ever on this masterpiece. I would say this is up there in my favourite albums of the decade so far. I'd also advise you to check out their equally impressive back catalogue especially the fabulous "Beacase of the Nights".
Often when bands release an album which makes them an instant commerical success after having a number of more underground releases, the true fans aren't impressed. However this is definetly the exception, alot of my mates have liked the band since day 1 & rate this latest album very highely which I think says it all!
The fourth album and so far most commercial release by Kings of Leon.
As soon as I heard "Sex On Fire" on the radio for the first time I immediately thought they had targetted a new audience in an attempt to sell more records.
I think the fact that the track became their first UK number one single proves my point as they had not even had a top 10 single previously.
This is in no way a criticism as this is a fabulous album crammed full with brilliant tracks from the atmospheric "Closer" right through to "Cold Desert".
"Sex On Fire" had a lot of my friends talking about what a great track it was as soon as it was released, not something that often happens. It's a track that always seems to get the party going when played on a night out even now and it is several months since it came out.
In my opinion "Use Somebody" is every bit as good and I was a little surprised that it didn't also top the chart.
Third single "Revelry" is quite good but doesn't quite have the quality of the other singles.
Something else that stands out for me on this album is Caleb's vocals in relation to the lyrics. Anyone who owns any of the previous three KOL albums, like I do and would recommend them all especially "Aha Shake Heartbreak", and has read the lyrics will realise there is much more clarity in terms of his singing of the words. Whereas he has previously tended to miss out some of the words when singing this is not the case here, perhaps more so in terms of the singles. Then again this is perhaps because the songs on this album are better written. Don't get me wrong I love all their albums so far but this one has the edge.
My personal favourite track is "Crawl". My least favourite track is "Notion" which is one of the more mellow tracks but is still an ok song.
"I Want You" is also more mellow and is a bit different to what I have come to expect but is nevertheless a really good song, as is "Be Somebody".
If you have only heard the singles but liked them I would recommend you buy this album. As a big fan I would recommend you buy it anyway. I would be surprised if you were to be disappointed.
