Although Syd Barrett only recorded two official albums, both in 1970, his tendency towards improvisation in the studio, and the numerous alternate takes produced due to his tendency to change what he was playing every time (much to the chagrin of his collaborators like David Gilmour, who preferred to approach experimental music from a conservative vantage point), have allowed record companies to release a string of compilations over the decades purporting to fill the gap left by Barrett's departure from the music scene.
