Advantages: An Eclectic Mix Of Styles, Within Sensible Bounds
Disadvantages: A bit too backgroundy for some.
Red Snapper really are very good at what they do, now with this album their funky dub is highly polished. The vocals are either male or female depending on the track, and whilst they have guest vocalists they blend together perfectly to make this one smooth laid back album. Many of the songs with lyrics have a trip-hoppy backing. However not all the tracks have vocals and those that don't are atmospheric soundscapes and these constitute some of the best and most beautiful pieces. On a lot of the tracks there is excellent usuage of distorted vocal samples, more for fleshing than for lyrical content. Anyway the tracks on here go like this: 'Keeping Pigs Together' is a lightish start with a relatively desolate feel. It is an urban soundscape with good pace and admirable use of strings. 'Some Kind Of Kink' is the same pace. The main vocal are distorted but only slightly. It has a kind of rain synth sound going through the verses, which get replaced with a distorted vocal sample for the chorus. As well as this is some well fitted funky bass. 'Shellback' this one has great low deep beats in its trip-hop tune with brilliant female soul vocals, also the vocal sample makes a return for percussion purposes. 'Don't Go Nowhere' is another soundscape, which seems to be hopeful in the grimy depths of the city. A real nice piano riff appears here and it has skilled use of watery effects. 'The Rake' is an upbeat track with a strange banjo-esque motif. The vocals are split in two between straight rapping and distorted Donald Duck vocal. 'The Rough And The Quick' has a fast beat and is a bit funky. It is also smooth with female soul vocals. 'Bussing', a soundscape, with scratching, piano and trumpet. 'I Stole Your Car' quite a bouncy affair with rapped vocals. 'Alaska Street' a peaceful classical interlude introduc
es the track before going into a soundscape rendition of time and panic with compulsion. 'Belladonna' starts with a sparse icy intro, whilst it warms up a bit it stays a very quiet track. 'They're Hang Me Tonight' is a busy soundscape, with lots of use of high whining violin sounds. Whilst I may not of said much about some of the individual tracks this does not mean they are sub-standard in any way. It is just that there is a lot of similarity when describing these kinds of track despite them being very individual tracks. At 57 minutes in all its a good length and doesn't have any filler. Whilst at times it strays into the background music category it can usually manage to drag itself back to being an engaging listen. It is therefore a worthwhile purchase as it tends to cover three or four distinct kinds of song making it an eclectic selection, but never straying too far and making you wonder if a song belongs on here.
