Out of the Blue, along with Eldorado, is as good as ELO ever got in my opinion. Amongst the general public this is a band that is very underrated and the best of ELO is of the highest standard, a standard surpassed only by The Beach Boys and The Beatles, but not all of the time. Jeff Lynne was obviously in inspired mood when he cut this album, so much so that he made it a double album. Few double albums have ever used the extra time for creativity as well as Out of the Blue does. Of what would have been four sides of music on the original vinyl there are slow songs, fast songs, Lynne's first dabble in a disco sound, ELO's finest instrumental The Whale, and a ... Out of the Blue was the Electric Light Orchestra's big break, and although it's predecessor a New World Record included hits like Telephone Line and Livin' Thing, this gave them a new purpose and led to them winning mnay awards. I love the album, and I used to play the original lp versions rather loudly. I have several copies of the lp on coloured vinyl and on 2 seperate record labels. Originally released on United Artists, this was later moved to their more famous jet label. Later versions were also released through sony. Not withstanding the album, I've bought several 7 inch single versions on different purple coloured vinyls of Sweet Talkin' ... Read the complete review

I was introduced to ELO by my brother, his bought the albums and Ilistened to them. It wasn't until the 80s thought that I really 'found' this album and since then i've bought the vinyl, cassette and CD versions. My first copt even had the cardboard copy of the spaceship from the cover. All the tracks are individual and distinct. Tracks such as Concerto for a Rainy Day and Wild West Hero are pure orchestral magic. Mr Blue Sky and Turn to Stone are nothing less than pop at its best. If ever an album defined the 70s shift in music, this is it. ... Read the complete review

Whoa! If anything Out Of The Blue is a case of too much information. There are seventeen tracks and if you know ELO then you will come to understand that every track sounds like a pop single, and this album is no different. Mr. Blue Sky is obviously the best and deserves to be up there in pop heaven, but the styles and the production values are so good that the whole album is a delight. It doesn't beat A New World Record for sheer class, and there are some fillers here, but buy it and you won't be disappointed. ... Read the complete review
