On top of this basis, there are added riffs, summoning the use of many different sounds, rhythms and levels of volume. With each track there is usually percussion added to the basic drum beat, such as an off-beat symbol, or a tambourine, and sometimes a barrage of other percussion, including maracas, wood-blocks and bells. Out There And Back - Paul Van Dyk: PAUL IS NOT A DYK (1600 words)

Rating:

“Out there and back” is the outstanding new album from Paul Van Dyk. Its release is proof that there is genuine music production talent around the world, and not only producers, but simple disk jockeys. Paul Van Dyk emerged on the dance music scene a little more than 4 years ago, and, in Germany at least, was hotly tipped to become a huge star. In the years to come, Paul won 3 consecutive awards for Best International DJ, in 1998, 1999, and 2000. This album is a tribute to his highly respectable DJ production, and, as the tracks on the album are mixed from one to the other, this LP is also proof, if proof were needed, that Van ...

Not since Jean-Michel Jarre's heyday has there been such interest in repeating electronic themes - trance, as the music is called these days. The trouble is that most modern practioners tend to overdo the repeating bit and neglect the invention that is essential for anything other than full volume appreciation in the company of a couple of hundred hot, sweaty people. Paul van Dyk though does not suffer any such failings. Born in East Germany in 1971, he started DJing in Britain at the age of 16. The list of artists he has remixed or collaborated with since reads like a "Who's Who" of the modern club scene, and no wonder as here is a man who ...

Sign Of Truth - Dionysus
More fun power metal, with great production from Tobias Sammet. Nothing new here.

Sound Of Perseverance - Death
Hugely enjoyable and talented jazz-prog-death metal. Structurally screwed.

Sounds From A Bygone Age Vol.2 - Romica Puceanu
Some great recordings of rare tracks Misses some of Romica's best works

Spiritual Black Dimensions - Dimmu Borgir
Improved clean vocals. Impossible to really enjoy.

Spiritual Healing - Death
Perfects the early death metal style, and is ready to move on. Still a little repetitive once each song hits its stride.

Stab Wounds - Dark Fortress
Great melodic black metal for newcomers. Offers little to those already familiar with the genre.

Starfall - Dragonland
Successful experimentation. Lacks diversity.

Storm Of The Light's Bane - Dissection
Innovating melodic forms of extreme metal. Few songs stand out.

Stormblast - Dimmu Borgir
Perfect incorporation of keyboards and melodic elements into the black metal sound. Plagiarism.

Sunflower - Beach Boys
Some incredibly good songs, perhaps the last truly great Beach Boys album/s. Although the other members perform excellently, Brian's lack of lead vocal input is missed at times,
