Advantages: A great mix of ballads

Disadvantages: Only Ballads

Spider Web and im caught in the middle....
One of the most famous lines from one ot the best new indie bans around. I say new but really Coldplay have been playing the circuit for 3 or 4 years.
This album, Parachutes is their first album and contains their 2 biggest hits to date. These are Trouble and Yellow.
Their sound is a mixture of simple guitar riffs and melodic piano mixed in with soft bass an gentle drums.
Best not to compare them to anyone as there is no one around with a similar sound. They are unique in a world of heavy indie rock and boy band oblivion. However, if you twisted my arm, I may say they sound like a happy version of Radiohead.

The Parachutes album shows that their skills do lie in soft ballads and the majority of the album is made up of these.

The 2 big tracks, as I mentioned are "Yellow" and "Trouble".
Firstly, Yellow is one of those tracks that they play at festivals like Reading and V2001 and dont even need to sing the words. Everyone knows it that well it has become an indie anthem. Close your eyes at these gigs and everyone around you is singing along. I imagine this is the biggest tribute a band can get, when their hands are singing the words back to them. Its everything you could want from a song. Its catchy, its slow, its romantic and it reminds everyone of a certain something in their life whether its good or bad.

Next up is Trouble.
Trouble is slightly more moody but again having a catchy piano solo. Simple but effective. Chris Martin's voice is superb on this track and really gives it some feeling. The piano and guitar compliment each other brilliantly.

Another great track from the album, although less well known is Shiver. This is probably a good example of slow harmonied piano with a rip roaring guitar in the chorus. Most like Radiohead out of all of their tracks.

Probably one if the more famous tracks without actually being a hit in
its own right opens the album and is entitled "Dont Panic". The line "We live in a beautiful world" is one that reminds me of their concerts. It is one of the tracks that they perform better live.

While the album is littered with these dreamy, drifting ballads, they actually lack any diversity in their musical style. With some bands this is a bad thing but with Coldplay is an acceptable part of their sound. Mainly unique, coldplay ocntinue to thrill their fans with the follow up album. however, if you want true coldplay, this is the album to start with.
