Graceland - Paul Simon

heard it, stop reading this and go and buy it NOW! Graceland is one of the best albums ever made IMO. I like a lot of Simon and Garfunkel, but this is on another level. It carries you from Louisiana Cajun jive to deep African rhythmn with total ease and you will find yourself dancing by the end of the first side. (TIP: listen to it on your own the first time, so as not to embarrass yourself and not in a car, or you'll speed). It has a broad range of musics and styles on it that I haven't experienced anywhere else except maybe Afro-Celt Sound System. I wore out my first copy of it! Ladysmith Black Mambazo are still around and are still a great group; ...

and breaking down barrriers and the musics not too bad either. This album casued a stir at the time of release because of the fact that Paul Simon used South African musicians and singers on this album. They said he was taking advantage of them. Oh how he had the last laugh. The album is unique, it captures a spirit and a vibe as well as being a supremely good record. Prehaps part of the reson this still sounds so fresh and groundbreaking after nearly 15 years is the use of Ladysmith Black Mambarzo. They bring a tribal feel to the whole thing, something that people have tried to repeat and failed. The highlight of the album is the wonderful "Diamonds of ...

from the cigarette counter where I should have asked for it, told me I was getting something really, really good. I'm waffling, I know, but what words can do Paul Simon justice? This compilation has some of my favourite songs on it: 'Graceland', 'Me and Julio..', 'Still Crazy', the one with all the drumming from 'Rhythm of the Saints', 'The Obvious Child', 'Mother and Child Reunion' ... Actually the list goes on and on. Not all the good ones are there, but how could they fit them on? My worry was that you can't abstract tracks from the later albums especially, which seem all of a piece, and put them into a ...
