Phallus Dei (God's Penis) was the debut album by early experimental Krautrock band Amon Duul who are often considered as the forefathers of German rock n roll. Experimental they are, particularly for Germans who were a bit behind at this point in the world of rock. This album released in 1969, despite some negatives was a groundbreaking record all the same. 5 tracks only, it consists of 4 short tracks of which the first Kanaan is in my opinion the best - it sounds like The Doors mixed up with a bit of Pink Floyd, the next 3 songs are extremely experimental and have some excellent parts to them but I find the operatic vocals a little bit on the jarring side. ... One of the less historically significant releases of 1969, but one of my personal favourites, 'Phallus Dei' is Amon Düül II's first album since they became Amon Düül II. Previously, the band had experienced a turbulent and intriguing existence as a loose, freeform, psychedelic jam session for various German musicians, until the most level-headed ones decided to stop the tomfoolery and release an album that's quite mad. Spewed from the primordial soup of prog rock's not-so -humble beginnings, this is an avant-garde release still based primarily around psychedelic jams, but also bearing traces of what would later be affectionately termed "krautrock." ...
