Advantages: some very good songs, excellent work for a debut

Disadvantages: not mainstream so people will be very critical of it

I have read raving reviews on Shakira's second album Dónde Están Los Ladrones and personally I have to agree. However, her debut album is slightly disappointing if heard after second album.

As what usually happens, artist get better with experience and age and this is certainly true with Shakira. I haven't actually bought this album, Ive only borrowed it off a friend and to be honest, this is how it will stay with me. Although this album is a stomping debut for someone of her age when she made it, it doesn't have any staying power with me, as in its not an album you would buy and years later still be playing it. To be honest Im not being very fair on this album in comparing it with the second album but in this harsh world of so many different songs coming out at the same time, tough decision have to be made. Im afriad that in my eyes this doesn't stand the test.

Having said that that I will point out the better sides to this album. There a few great songs on here that even though sung in Spanish still induce emotions in the listener. Such songs like Te Necesito which is a really heart warming song which, when listen to in the right mood, will really lift your spirits. This I have to say is the best song on the album. A close runner up is Pienso En Ti. This is a vocal number which is only 2:28 minutes long with a quiet echoing music in the background. This is best listen to in absolute silent to get the whole effect. Truly emotional. Other songs are ok depending on what kind of person you are and what mood your in, but this album is more latin pop rather than her later pop/rock as with Dónde Están Los Ladrones and Laundry Service. However, if you was to buy this album I'ld recommend that you find some way to listen to it before buying it.

This may seem to be a rather poor review but im finding this hard to word correctly without overly complimenting or overly criticising the album. Its one of those albums that

you love dearly if you're a complete shakira nut who wont hear a bad word about her, or a person who likes a few good songs only. Its definatly not main stream which does go against it as people do tend to follow the herd. I can only suggest that you try before you buy.

I was unable to find this in any highstreet shop but it is on Amazon priced at £11.99. However, it can be purchused cheaper if brought used from the amazon marketplace. In total there are 11 tracks as follows;

1. Estoy aqui
2. Antologia
3. Un poco de amor
4. Quiero
5. Te necesito
6. Te espero sentada
7. Pies decalzos, suenos blancos
8. Vuelve
9. Pienso en ti
10. Donde estas corazon
11. Se quiere, se mata

-Estoy aqui was her major hit which propelled her to Latin fame. Its a very upbeat kind of track.
-Antologia is a slow, mellow kind of out door track, siuted for a evening surrounded by friend after a party or something. Beautifully sung.
-Un poco de amor. Reminds me of a pop/regga/caribbean kind of song. Very, 'all sing together song'. No bad, but definatly not the best song on the album.
-Quiero. Starts off with an extended guitar strumming away and builds up with harmonica and then drums join in. Mellow, but with a uplifing beat.
-Te necesito. The best song of the album. Reminds me of Tu off her Dondes album, with the same kind of heart warming story of a song. Lovely guitar work at the start that inspires emotion.
-Te espero sentada. A very latin song with the latin dancing kind of tune, with guitars and sax. Very smooth.
-Pies decalzos, suenos blancos. This has a very southern american soft roack theme to it. Ok song but not the best. Doesn't stand out really.
-Vuelve. Continues the soft roack theme. Slightly better than Pies decalzos.
-Pienso en ti. A very different song to the rest. A voical song with a hint of echoy guitar. Very intense. One of the best songs.
-Donde estas c

orazon. Not one of my favourites. Very 'lets all sing together' and 'worldly' music.
-Se quiere, se mata. A average song with not much to write home about.
