Released in 1973 at the height of Ziggy mania this album was not one of Bowies best in the eyes of a lot of his fans. The Ziggmaster was on the crest of a wave following the release of some great albums. Hunky Dory in 1971 The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972 Aladdin Sane 1973 Pin Ups was released to cash in on the massive success of Aladdin Sane and although a decent enough album in it's own right, it wasn't what the combed back and blow dry hairstyled Ziggy fans expected. This is an album of cover versions, a concept that I personally disapprove of, and always seems somewhat wasteful when the artist has the song-writing talent of David Bowie. The idea with this album was that Bowie would cover old songs by other musicians he once worshipped himself (hence 'Pin Ups') Some of the tracks are interesting, such as the versions of Pink Floyd's 'See Emily Play' and the Easybeats 'Friday On My Mind', and 'Sorrow' actually improves on the Merseys' original. But Bowie's style is ill-fitting for tracks from the likes of the Kinks, the Yardbirds, and the Who. A curio, but ultimately a disappointing one. ... Read the complete review
