Advantages: Raw and edgy sound, the darker side of Rivers Cuomo and Weezer.

Disadvantages: May be a little too dark and obscure for some.

The career of Weezer began back in 1992 in Los Angeles, California. Their first album was released in 1994 and is the self-titled 'Weezer' which is more commonly called 'The Blue Album' due to its blue cover. 'Pinkerton' was the difficult second album, a far darker album than their first and one which I consider to be their best. The bands front man Rivers Cuomo is seen by some as somewhat of an artistic genius, I however just perceive him to be a socially awkward outcast of a man that happens to write exceptionally good music.

There is something greatly engaging about the music of Weezer, they are not the most exciting band in the world and nor are they the most talented; but something just seems to click into place with their music making it sound excellent and always enjoyable to listen to. The album consists of ten tracks and not a single one of these disappoints. Each of them have their own individual merit and all are worthy of their places here. 'El Scorcho' is probably my favourite from the album, a track which has me singing along every time and wondering how the band managed to make it so additively appealing given the simplicity of it all. Perhaps it is this simplicity that makes it so good, it works because of its minimalistic approach and lack of clutter. Whatever it is that makes this track so good I can't quite put my finger on, but I'd definitely recommend listening to it that's for sure.

Although I've highlighted 'El Scorcho' as a favourite from this album, don't write off the rest of the release. All the tracks on this album are impressive and each is edgy and individual enough to hold your full undivided attention for its entirety. Right from the opening the album impresses as the drum beat to 'Tired Of Sex' comes pounding, and never do the band allow the quality to drop at any stage in the album. Tracks such as 'Getchoo' and 'Falling For You' are simply brilliant, essential listening that anyone who does not hear them is sorely missing out upon.

When 'Pinkerton' was released it was quite underrated and went down as a 'cult' album, a slow burner that eventually enthused masses. These days the album is actually probably overrated as many speak too highly of the album and hold it in such high regard that it is just untrue. It may be fair to say that this is my favourite Weezer album, but only just and no way can it be seen today that the album is still in any way underrated. The album has many admirers and this is for good reason, 'Pinkerton' is a fantastic album and should be listened to by anyone that has even the slightest of interest in Rock music. It may not change your life but it should certainly impress you greatly.

Summary: Weezer's difficult second album is in my opinion the best of the lot, but only just.
