Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn Release Date: 1967 Track #1 - Astronomy Domine: Piper at the Gates of Dawn begins in typically abstract fashion for Pink Floyd; an indiscernible voice leads us into the opening track. Nevertheless, the recognisable skill of the guitar work soon meanders in, and we have what may well be termed as "classic Floyd" soon enough. The psychedelic tone of the song is a joy to behold, and as per usual, the vocals are stellar. The ever-changing tone of the song creates a mild unease, and I say that in the best sense possible. An impressive opener for the album. Track #2 - Lucifer ... Read the complete review

Whilst the beatles take all the credit for being the most original group of the sixties, those in the know know that the psychedelic movement had kicked off well before they managed to put out Seargeant Pepper. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is many respects the classic Floyd album and Syd barrett became a legend off of the back of it. Listenign to it now, however, it doesn't quite have the same impact that it might have once had. Yes, there are moments of stark genius, the extended instrumental, interstellar overdrive is evidence of that, I have that moment where the sound switches quickly between two speakers permanently etched into my brain. The opener, Astronomy ... Read the complete review

Gosh, I am being candid with you this week! This time, I have decided to let you in on a secret about my love life. But more on that later. Read on. I have a penchant for cheesy pop. I love Steps, Hear’say, Kylie, Atomic Kitten, Abba, Darius and Will Young. But I also have a darker side to me too and a lot of that is satisfied by the wonderful Pink Floyd. I first discovered Pink Floyd back in 1986 when my First Love (yes, him again) lent me a load of his records. These included a large helping of the Floyd. I listened to The Wall and Comfortably Numb remains my all-time favourite song. Another of his records that he lent to me was this ... Read the complete review

Well this is where it all started and what a start it was. This even now is considered one of the definitive albums of the sixties and can stand up well to any album of that era that you would care to mention. This is what make Syd Barrets descent into madness all the more tragic, in that he was clearly a great talent and also make this album more poignant. They had already made a name for themselves that year playing in the UFO club and very popular as an underground psychdelic band. This album was recorded in Abbey Road were The Beatles had recorded Sgt Peppers. This album had less influence on Popular Music but was maybe every bit as good as the ... Read the complete review

Quintesstial english psychedelia, one of the finest examples of the genre. Whilst it gives little indication of where the Floyd would end up in their mid 70's commercial hey day I personally think it is on a par or even exceeding anything produced by the later Roger Waters led Floyd. I think the most important thing about this album is that to my ears, most of the album still sounds fresh and inventive. The songwriting is pure unhinged pop brilliance and ranks with anything produced by the kinks etc at the same time. I am still to hear a song quite as unhinged as bike and that psychotic duck(anyone whos heard the album will know what I mean!) at the end of ... Read the complete review
