Brixton Acadamy,London 1991

I had never heard the Pixies when my friend gave me a spare ticket that night.I was just coming out of heavy metal and into Indie rock, I was 17 and it changed my life.

I was down the front with my friends and I'll never forget the electricity in the air befor they took to the stage. When the lights dimmed the venue erupted like nothing I had ever seen or seen since.

The Pixies kicked off with 'Cecilia-Ann' but were still behind a curtain in the dark as they played it. I have never been thrown around so much in my life but that was nothing. The curtain lifted and they launched into 'Rock Music' with a venom I had never before witnessed in any band.I just remember seeing a shilouette of a fat man with a guitar in all the dry ice and green light and being separated from my friends as we were lost in a sea of maniacs to a soundtrack of armageddon. I was shit scared.

I remember fighting my way out to the sound of 'Crackity Jones'to somewhere safer. Hearing them launch into Debaser was the moment my life changed. I had lost my virginity for the second time but this lasted longer!!! I had just never heard such absract melody before and any band that could provoke fear in me like that had to be special.
I remember them playing 'Wave of mutilation','Gouge away',Nimrod's Son' and just about any Pixies song you ever wanted to hear. You have to remember I had never heard their music before this night and I was hearing it live.
It was all a blur to me that night and I wasn't even drunk. The next day I was in shellshock and straight down to the highstreet to buy every album by The Pixies to try and understand this thing I had seen and heard. Then it occured to me that I had just seen the best band on the planet.
I saw Nivana at their last ever UK gig and it was pathetic in comparison and I adored Nirvana.
Want to know the meaning of life? Recomme
nd to the new generation of rock kids that they get an education by getting hold of every Pixies record available and studying it. They won't have heard anything like it and will not ever again.

They sure played debaser! It was the defining moment of the night and the justification of why I love rock.I saw the Pixies again at their last ever UK gig, two years later, at the Brixton Acadamy on the Trompe Le Monde tour.I have to admit it was still better than any band around today, but by Pixies standards they were tired and pissed off with each other, which showed.Still great though. And a Pixies mosh pit makes Limp Bizkit's look like a tea party!

Oh man, what I wouldn't give!!! Did they play Debaser? If they did I imagine you were lucky to escape with limbs intact!
Good op,

Amen to that!It really was a magical time in music. When they played 'Where is my mind'the whole world seemed to make sense.
