Advantages: An eye-opening insight into the world of Placebo and how they began.
Disadvantages: Absolutely none.
Emerging at the tail end of the brit-pop fad in the 90s, Placebo well and truly made their mark with this monster of a debut album.
After releasing several singles from this album, the band well and truly broke through big time in early 1997 with the release of 'Nancy Boy', which smashed into the charts at #4. This was the beginning for the band, where the album also reached the top 5 off the back of this and they managed another top 20 from the album with 'Bruise Pristine'.
With this being the start of Placebo's career, this also means Brian's youthfulness (where he does actually sound like a boy who's voice is breaking on this album) and perverted lyrics are at their most bold and beautiful.
The album follows a fairly similar sound throughout, so if you liked the singles you're pretty much guaranteed to like the rest of the album. 'Nancy Boy' is controversially about going out and looking for homosexual sex, 'Bionic' apparently about a vibrator... this should give some kind of indication of Brian's lyrics here.
This album is by my reckoning an essential purchase, Placebo are a very special, underrated band with unique ideas and a unique vision.
Summary: This is a very highly recommended purchase.
