Advantages: a few good tracks
Disadvantages: plenty of filler
Dylan's reunion with The Band - it sounds too good to be true, and it is, while not a bad album by any means, considering the personnel, this has to be considered underwhelming.
The biggest track here is 'Forever Young', appearing twice in immediate succession, a building mini-epic, the acoustic reprise proving even more effecting than the more full blown version which preceded it.
As the album was recorded in a little over three days, the slighty relaxed & intimate result perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise. It's an unassuming record, & while not poor, is unlikely to compel you to come back regularly. It's a decent collection of songs, but compared to Dylan's better work, it pales in comparison.
The album was the precursor to the huge 1974 tour with the Band, Dylan;s first fully blown tour since 1966, listening to the album, you get the feeling it was an afterthought, & as such a disappointment.
Summary: Not among his best
