Play - Moby
Advantages: Some awesome, timeless songs
Disadvantages: Some filler tracks
I listened to this album the other day almost ten years after I bought it. Play by Moby was released in 1999 and was a huge hit with tracks like the pumping Bodyrock and the beautiful Honey and Porcelain. The thing with this album is I think Moby as a person came across as a slightly self-important vegan just after it came out and was mocked in a high profile feud with Eminem and this definitely affected his profile as we haven't heard much at all about his later work.
Anyway back to the album, its a good un, definitely a 4 out of 5 due to the sheer eclectic tracks and the quantity of tracks. The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and was voted number 341 out of the Rolling Stone Magazines top 500 albums of all time.
When listening to the album, I immediately go to my favourite tracks, these being Bodyrock, which is a buzzing piece of electro breakbeat, it still sounds relevant today and is much better than a lot of current stuff. Honey still sounds cool and with its lovely old style jazz sample sounds like a beautiful precursor to Gnarls Barclays style of music.
Porcelain is a beautiful mix of strings, samples and piano and was used in the film, 'The Beach' for me this is the most beautiful song on the album and really sounds as good today as on first listen.
Everyone remembers the haunting, 'Why does my heart feel so bad' and in many ways I think the fact a lot of songs on this album are so popular and were used for adverts make them seem a bit weak when in fact they are excellent songs.
Natural Blues is another popular hit although not one I have any real affinity to. The other songs on the album mix instrumentals with samples to winning affect and still sound current.
"Honey" - 3:27
"Find My Baby" - 3:58
"Porcelain" - 4:01
"Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" - 4:23
"South Side"+ - 3:48
"Rushing" - 2:58
"Bodyrock" - 3:34
"Natural Blues" - 4:12
"Machete" - 3:36
"7" - 1:00
"Run On" - 3:44
"Down Slow" - 1:32

"Inside" - 4:46

"My Weakness" - 3:37
Overall this is a very good album with 5 stand out tracks and lots of good background music for parties or meals, its inoffensive, eclectic and well thought out. The album cost me £9.99 back in the day when cd albums were all the rage but costs £4.42 on Amazon or can be downloaded on I-Tunes.
