NB: Some of you may be pleased to know that the following review isn't in my usual track-by-track format, as I don't think it's appropriate for this particular album. I was ten weeks away from my 9th birthday when The Beatles' first official album Please Please Me was released on 22nd March 1963. The whole thing was recorded in a single day during February 1963 and it was released after the song Please Please Me had quickly shot to no.2 in the UK singles charts in January of the same year. The album made it to no.1 in the UK album charts in April of 1963, no.32 on its re-entry in March 1987 and no.38 on its re-issue in September of this year. The tracks are ... I remember this album being released as if it was only yesterday. Well that might be a slight exaggeration, but it certainly does not seem like 38 years ago. The Beatles were a fantastic phenomenon and took the early 1960’s music scene by storm. Although there were other great bands around at that time like The Rolling Stones and The Hollies, it was The Beatles that totally dominated the whole of the music sound of the time. This was their first album to be released and it was obvious at the time that it would be a terrific success, and of course it was. Included on the album is their first number one single hit which was Please, Please Me. There ... Read the complete review

Please, Please Me is the first album by The Beatles and it was the start of the biggest thing to hit music. This first album really shows, it is more raw than the albums that followed but even then it still shows some class for a debut album. It's hard to beleive that 'I Saw Her Standing There' could have come from them so early. Some of the songs do have a very different beat to them, certainly The Beatles matured quickly after this. Songs like Misery, Anna (Go To Him), Boys and A Taste of Honey are weaker songs by Beatles standards. But Chains and Twist and Shout are worth listening to and then you have the classics Please, Please Me and ... Read the complete review

The first album from the scouse moptops, most of you have probably heard the majority of this album, there are some classics here, but most of them are a bit dated now. The likes of "love me do", which can't be denied, is one of the addictive songs of all time, but is a bit boring and stale now. Half of the album is made up of covers, by the likes of Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins. The best song i feel is "I saw her standing there" which McCartney still plays in his sets today, not the best Beatles album, but it is historical and you could have worse albums in your collections. ...
