=== U2 - Pop === === General information === * Name: U2 * Album: Pop * Year: 1997 * Duration: 60 minutes * Number of tracks: 12 === Who is U2? === U2 is an Irish band formed in 1976 and consists of four members, including Bono (vocals and guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Adam (bass guitar) and Larry (drums). U2 has been known for more than thirty years, and already started in 1976. The band members met at school and decided to start a band. They have since then grown in terms of music and had influences of rock, alternative rock, punk, dance and pop. Especially in recent years was increasingly criticized for being too much inclined to Pop music and less focused on rock. Eventually, they released 12 albums and more than 150 million albums sold worldwide. The best part is that the band still consists of all original members. === U2 - Pop === Pop is the ninth studio album by the Irish band U2, and was released in 1997. With this album, the band goes an different direction and gets more alternative rock and dance. When you look at the commercial success of this album it was a moderate success but the worsts compared to the other albums of U2. Here a discussion of some numbers: Discothèque The synthetic pop influence on this album is with the song already clear. A bit strange electronic beat begins the song, but after that it is soon back to the drum and bass. Both Bono and The Edge sing the song, but the voices are more in the background. It's a good up tempo song with electronic pop influences. If God Will Send His Angels The song begins very slow and very simple with only Bono in the foreground singing and soft guitar in the background. Halfway goes up some pace, but it remains a relatively slow song. I find this song ok but overall too slow for me. Staring at the Sun Staring at the Sun is a great song were the band does what they are good at. Rock influences with a clear use of the drums and the guitar and especially the beautiful warm voice of Bono in the foreground. The number remains reasonably mid tempo. Certainly one of the stronger songs. Gone This number begins with a clear use of an electric guitar or electric type of influence. It starts quietly with Bono's voice. Only halfway the song gets considerably stronger and the volume goes a bit higher. I particularly like the guitar work, but is otherwise a reasonable number. === Conclusion === There are a few songs with good rock influences, and especially good use the bass and drums. But the rest of the album isn't that great for me. The songs are overall too slow and sometimes even a bit boring and chaotic. For me three stars. === Songs on the album === "Discothèque" "Do You Feel Loved" "Mofo" "If God Will Send His Angels" "Staring at the Sun" "Last Night on Earth" "Gone" "Miami" "The Playboy Mansion" "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" "Please" "Wake Up Dead Man"
"Ladies and Gentlemen, roll up to see the U2 extravaganza.Guaranteed to be the biggest and best show of your life.' That is perhaps what the advertisments for Popmart should have read. For U2 managed to create such anticapation over a tour that it overshadowed what really mattered, the album.Which is a shame because it really is a great album. Sure,it could have done with more time in the studio(Please and Staring at the Sun sound much better live),but it still sounds good after all, that's that matters.Right? It all kicks off with Discoteque,a brillant, and it has to be said, fun song about drugs. "You know you're chewin' bubblegum You know what that is But you still want some' Great stuff(the song that is,not the drugs. But who am I decide over such matters.I mean society has a role to play i..............[sound of merciful gunshot]).Great video too,the boys doing their take of the Village People. Do You Feel Loved is equally un-U2 like in it's,dare I say ,funkiness. And Mofo almost nears the most anti-rock thing in the world, the dance song.No point complaining though, they're excellent. But to stop our from falling off with amazement,up pops something which resembles a U2 song,If God Will Send His Angels. This sparks something of a God theme throughout the album, always questioning His desire to help us,always looking for answers. Then the ultimate summer song,Staring at the Sun.It's a beautiful anthem, but is bettered by later acoustic versions on tour.Last Night on Earth and Gone are both strong songs,so it's a shame the run is interrupted by Miami. It's not completely terrible though, under different circumstances it could be good in fact,it just doesn't quite work on this album. Things are put back on track with The Playboy Mansion,a funky look on Amer ican pop culture. Then a love song to rival With or Without you,If You Wear that Velvet Dress.A low tempo song we can pretend to have written for our musically unknowing girlfriends(*as clear as your conscience). Please and Wake up Deadman, two very special songs, are left to let us contemplate over the new,hip U2.Not too long ago it was Artists Against Aparthaid, now it's coke and Michael Jackson.
Truly a monumental album. While not the best U2 album, it will be remembered as one of the finer of U2's moments. It is a lot more upbeat than, say, The Joshua Tree, and it sets the pace at the start with the first single Discotheque, which competes for the title of The Edge's best solo. Then comes the stunning Do You Feel Loved, another lively tune with some amazing vocals from Bono.MOFO steps up next, and if you own any of U2's albums this will shock you. With its dance beat and funky vocals it's as close as U2 will ever get to a dance track! It then slows down for a while with If God Will Send His Angels blasts back in with Staring At The Sun and knocks you out with the classic Gone (voted best song on the album by U2.com).Then comes the only down point of the album.Miami.This rushed track just feels out of place with whiny vocals and terrible backing music.Thank god for the redeeming The Playboy Mansion. This excellent guitar track with clever lyrics and great vocals is awe inspiring. The last three tracks are possibly the pinnacle of the album. If You Wear That Velvet Dress is slow, sensual and stunning. There's no other word but stunning! Then comes Please with The Edge's excellent guitar and then Wake Up Dead Man,the last track on an amzing album. This album of course prompted the infamous POPMART tour, which became known for its extravagance. The album was also criticized by a lot of people and made me initially wary of purchasing it.But when i saw it at a cut down price of £4.99 I couldn't resist! How I have celebrated that decision.I urge you to make the leap of faith.
