Advantages: angry young women can play guitar and scream in a loud voice
Disadvantages: a bit repetitive: I think the band really come into their own on 'Live through This'
If you like the Spice Girls, the Corrs and value your hearing, don't bother with this album. Back in 1991 when this album was recorded Courtney who a punk diva who alternates between screaming out her anger and moaning in a tortured fashion. The album as a whole contains a couple of good tracks: 'Teenage Whore' is shockingly compelling and 'Pretty on the Inside' depicts female jealously extremely well. However, I felt that most of the tracks go on a little too long and seem a touch repetitive. Certain lyrics really stand out as being excellent: others seem like garbled nonsense. When I first heard this album I felt liberated and relieved: yes, girls can have rock bands and no, they don't have to sing like Madonna or Britney Spears. However now that my musical tastes have broadened and I don't just listen to angry young women who scream in a loud voice anymore, this isn't a CD that I find myself returning to, which is the ultimate test of whether it's a worthwhile purchase or not. If this is your first Hole album, I recommend you give 'Live through This' a listen: it is without doubt their finest album.
