Advantages: solid pop
Disadvantages: only nine songs
You might be fortunate to remember Bros, if not then this review should leave you with a small taster what the two brothers had to offer. Matt and Luke Goss were Bros, they were helped by drummer Craig Logan. They rose to fame rapidly, off the back of the single 'When Will I Be Famous.'
It was not long before the group were making regular appearances in Smash Hits and Big Magazine. Girls across the UK were going Bros crazy.
'Push' was the debut album and contains the aforementioned song. It is sheer pop indulgence. Matt's vocals are a little raspy but also show an innocence which makes the song seem so appealing. The idea behind the song, searching for fame, makes it even more poignant, as the group hurtled to the top of the charts so quickly. There is a superb section where the beat is swung and it still sounds darned catchy today.
'Drop The Boy' is another one worth checking out, thanks to a growly vocal from Matt. Not as instant as the first song, but it has a neat groove to it which will eventually get to you. Head also to 'I Owe You Nothing' which restores the level of energy we first heard in 'When Will I Be Famous.' The song is all about Matt telling his lover he has nothing to give her and wants free of the restraints of the relationship.
'It's A Jungle Out There' is not that memorable, save for some biting lyrics which have a real sense of truity to them. Matt's vocal is pretty angry on this song and the attitude really comes through.
One of the highlights is the delicate 'Cat Amongst The Pigeons,' which shows maturity beyond its years. The vocals are spot on here and Matt succeeds in delivering a heartfelt performance and conveying pain and anguish in his every word. It is a startling and very atmospheric piece.
If you liked pop in the late eighties, then this is a delight to dip into. A brisk nine songs will bring back some fond memories.
Summary: poppy fun
