Advantages: Good guitar and original Queen
Disadvantages: Inconsistent at times
Queen emerged in 1973 with their first album, Queen. Prior to this albums release, Queen released a single, "Keep Yourself Alive", also containing "Son and Daughter". In my opinion, this was Queen at their best, For it was during the 70's that Queen were a heavy band.
Most noticeably, they have NO songs from the Greatest Hits, however, do not be put off, Queen were at a stage in their career, where they produced less hits. The best songs on this album are "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Great King Rat". My main criticism of this album is that, in my opinion "Seven Seas of Rhye" is a shorter and pretty pointless track compared to the version we all know better on Queen II.
The album starts off well with "Keep Yourself Alive". This song has great guitar throughout, and is probably the best track on the album. Brian May shows just why he is regarded as one of the best guitarist's of all time.
The next song, "Doing Alright" is not so good. a gentle song, and a much lighter one to the other tracks on this album. this song is closer to pop, and in my opinion never really gets going.
"Great King Rat" is another classic on this album, a lot of good guitar rythm and some amusing lyrics. This song is on par with "Keep Yourself Alive".
"My Fairy King" in my view is average. Again it never really gets going but is alright to listen to.
"Liar" demonstares good druming by the drummer Roger Taylor. A fun song to listen to and fast pace throughout. Again one of the heavier songs.
"The Night Comes Down" isn't a bad song either, this is a lighter rock song, not quite as good as "Liar". I usually skip this track. This is very much tthe same for the next two tracks.
"Jesus" is a song adapted from the bible. Interesting lyrics, this song is lighter rock. The album ends poorly however with Seven sea's of Rhye (instrumental).
I feel "Queen", like many of the Queen albums, could do with being a bit longer. However this is a great album to listen to, I would definitely recommend this album, particularly to those that prefer heavy music.
Summary: I would definitely recommend this album, particularly to those that prefer heavy music.

- 12/06/06 Although your review was on the whole useful to a prospective buyer your descriptions of the music could be more informative.Example: ""My Fairy King" in my view is average. Again it never really gets going but is alright to listen to."
Think about how useful this is in describing the track to someone who knows nothing about Queen. |
