SONGS FOR THE DEAF -------------------------- Queens of the stone age are a four piece consisting of Josh Homme(Kyuss), Nick Oliveri(Kyuss), Dave Grohl(Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and Mark Lanegan(Screaming Trees) on this album. I say that as the line-up is forever changing around the two founding members, Homme and Oliveri. They have enlisted the formidable drumming talents of Dave Grohl for this outing which moved their already tried and tested strengths onto bigger and better things. They sound like a band that really enjoy their own music and have an eye for detail that makes their tracks something to behold. Tracks. ... Read the complete review

This album is fantastic, though I would be the first to admit that it is a real grower, I only liked three of the songs initially but now however I love them all. Even now I am still confused by the track listing so If i get any of the tracks mixed up please don't kill me or anything. This album starts off with a bang, that bang being feel good hit of the summer. It is a very repetitive song yet it isn't boring at all, it is perfect for singing along to and jumping about to, which is never a bad thing. The only lyrics in the song are 'nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol .... c c c c c cocaine'. Yet the really clever thing ... Read the complete review

You sit back relaxing with your 'buddies' in their flat. No one is around and you've got some incense sticks in their holders waiting for that moment when you light them up to release their smell. Out of your pocket you pull out a small plastic bag with something inside it. You tear a little of the contents and place it into what you call a 'bucket'. Now it is time to stick on 'Rated R' or 'Restricted' by Queens Of The Stone Age. The CD player reads "track 1" and immediately you know it is beginning. Feel Good Hit Of The Summer ---------------------------- At this song you have got your contents or as ... Read the complete review

Sometimes buying on faith or because people used to be in a good group can backfire. I bought the 2 QOTSA albums in one go, simply because Josh Homme and the others were in Kyuss before QOTSA, and Kyuss were one of THE most inventive, grooving goddamn sexy noise making groups I know. Rated R's the second LP, it's great, but there's already one great review of it on this site (and another one with a guy's head up his "excrutiating" arse.) It took me a while longer to sink into the 1st LP, it's less immediate and got less "anthems" that R. But a few listens in, I love it. Here's an idea of what they ... Read the complete review

When a new album comes out, and magazines such as Kerrang! cream their pants over it, such as they did with 'Rated R', it's easy to forget the early stuff, which is a crying shame. Rated R has catchy tunes, like Feel Good Hit Of The Summer and it does touch on "What stoner should be like" with Autopilot and the endless outros, where they occur. Rob Halford (Judas Priest, baby!) and Mark Lanegan (of Screaming Trees, a band Josh Homme was involved with) lend their vocal talents, reinforcing my opinion that this is the album of a band who have Made It. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. For lo-fi sound, distortion, ... Read the complete review

Excellent lyrics, fine melodies, super vocals, and fantastic musicianship.
