Advantages: Different to most, but still rocks
Disadvantages: Less immediate than Rated R
Sometimes buying on faith or because people used to be in a good group can backfire. I bought the 2 QOTSA albums in one go, simply because Josh Homme and the others were in Kyuss before QOTSA, and Kyuss were one of THE most inventive, grooving goddamn sexy noise making groups I know. Rated R's the second LP, it's great, but there's already one great review of it on this site (and another one with a guy's head up his "excrutiating" arse.) It took me a while longer to sink into the 1st LP, it's less immediate and got less "anthems" that R. But a few listens in, I love it. Here's an idea of what they sound like. The first track is Regular John. This is probably closest to Kyuss material on here. Tracks like If Only and Can't Quit Me are beautifully crafted, still heavy, but hauntingly vocalled epics. Whereas Mexicola and You Would Know are just great downtuned geetars which bounce like a mother, they remind me a bit of the Wildhearts... Walkin on the Sidewalks is a combi of all this, the singers' voice is distinctive, and full of yearning, guitars driving the track along until it ends in an acoustic wig out of noise! In fact, all the tunes here share an energetic, heavy guitar noise, and are backed with wacky little sounds and effects. The vocals are great, and contain what i'd call a "dry US sense of humour" all the way thru! A little too much Deep South weed?? hmmm. It's good...maybe not as good as R, but as an LP, it rocks. Both LP's recommended if you have any interest in anything individual and noisy.
