Horses - Patti Smith

Premium Review Patti Smith - 'Horses' (222 words)

A quick PS - anyone who's listened to The Velvet Underground will be interested to know that John Cale produced this album - a fine recommendation if ever there was one. Also, Bono from U2 is a big P Patti Smith fan, claiming that 'Horses' is one of the records which had the greatest influence on him. To sum up, rock and roll filled with a passionate sincerity which the likes of the Stereotypicals and Travisty can only dream of equalling. ...

Grant Smith, Patti’s father, taken in 1945, in uniform. It’s a fitting choice, given the theme of the album, and a brave choice – the album’s not an easy-to-recognise P Patti Smith album. When all’s said and done, though, it’s lack of commercial success can’t be put down to this, or any lack of marketing – it’s basically not as good as her other albums. It starts with “One voice”, a track a like, which sounds like the 10,000 Maniacs, musically (although the vocals are nothing like Natalie Marchant’s), with pleasant jangly guitars. This song, along with “Strange Messengers” has a feel ...
