... unlikely pairing actually works very well together. This is all very laid-back stuff. Anyone hoping for a Plant rock out will be sorely disappointed as his performance here is incredibly subdued and this is to the benefit of the record as a whole. Both vocalists posses a sweet and magical charm and work harmonically very well together alternating who takes backing vocal duties. Credit must go to producer T Bone Burnett for bringing this together so wonderfully. It is little surprise that it works the way it does giv...more

Premium Review Raising Sand - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss: A match made in heaven (1213 words)

Rating:

When I first read that blue grass star Alison Krauss was going to make an album with the legendary Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, I was apprehensive to say the least. I had no idea what it would be like and couldn't work out how they could combine their quite different talents. Robert Plant should need no introduction, but if you've been living in a different universe for the last few decades let me briefly describe his style. As the flamboyant Led Zeppelin vocalist Plant was the inspiration for more than one generation of would-be rock idols, noted for his tight trousers, long curly locks and his (at times) screeching, sultry vocals. In recent years he ...  Read the complete review

i really didnt know what to expect with this album. robert plant, the legendary led zepplin front man and allison krauss, the...well...singer. i didnt really have any expectations for this album other than that of robert plant. some of the songs are good however most really arent my cup of tea. when playing them out loud people ask me what it is and tell me how they dont really like it. then i tell them its robert plant and their face lights up and their view changes somewhat. most people really are surprised with the combination of the two artists and i have to say most dont really enjoy the combination too well. this album combines wierd sounds with strange vocals to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Raising Sand - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss: All Hail The Odd Couple (425 words)
by - written on 04/11/09 (Very useful, 6 readings)

On paper, the pairing of Zepplin frontman Robert Plant and folk country singer Alison Krauss appears to be an odd one akin to Kylie and Nick Cave (well, actually, no pairing will ever be that odd). Released at the tail end of 2007 this album was greeted with justified critical acclaim and 6 Grammies for it's troubles including album of the year, contemporary American/ Folk album of the year and record of the year for the song 'Please Read The Letter'. This is testament to what in my opinion is a definitive contemporary folk/ country record and for anyone looking for an entry point into the genre, the best place to start. What makes this work is that the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review What a great pair! (406 words)

My father-in-law is a great fan of Led Zeppelin and that era of rock music. He is also an avid country and western listener, and partial to a songbird's voice. So, when we saw Raising Sand, this collaboration from The Zep's frontman Robert Plant and the angelic voice of Alison Krauss, we thought it an ideal gift. The album starts off in excellent form with the slightly jazz-sounding Rich Woman, and straight away any worries of the two stars' voices not matching are dispatched as Plant's normally rocky voice mellows out to combine naturally with Krauss' melodic voice. The trend continues with Killing The Blues, and I was rather surprised to find ...  Read the complete review

I bought this album because I loved Led Zeppelin and much of Robert Plant's solo work and because it kept being recommended to me by Amazon. I was a little put off at first as I know Alison Krauss is a country singer and it's not a genre of music I am so keen on or familiar with, but this gamble really paid off. It's a brilliant album. It almost feels as if I shouldn't be listening as it sounds so intimate and gentle between the two of them as they sing, much as Mojo magazine said. The only song I'd heard before buying this was Gone Gone Gone, which was upbeat and catchy. The rest of the album is more mellow and very relaxed and relaxing. Every ...  Read the complete review

The album is fun to listen to, the tracks strong to sing along to. All of the bands other albums are a lot better, the tracks all lack passion.

Highlights of the first two albums, performed impeccably. Pre-emptive, and annoying crowd noise.

Heavy and fast stoner doom. Repetitive song styles.

The bands members are quite talented. A lack of passion in the sound, no personality whatsoever put across in the music.
