Only Macca's second release after the break up of the Beatles, this was a more cohesive offering than his experimental sounding first album 'McCartney'. As with his first, this wasnt received with enormous enthusiam from the press, in fact its only in recent years that his first two albums have received the recognition they deserve as classic albums. After heavy production master peices such as Abbey Road and compared to 'Imagine' (Lennon) and 'All things must pass' (Harrison), this can sound a little bare and ramshackle but then McCartney had retired from public view to his farm for some time and this rubbed off. I bought Ram when it came out and I was only 12 years old so its hard for me to imagine what it would be like for someone listening to it for the first time now. It came out shortly after the Beatles breakup and followed McCartney's first solo LP which was experimental and a bit patchy. Ram was deservedly more successful but for me appears to have been rather forgotten over the years possibly because it did not spawn a big UK hit single which was at the time very important. What it does have though is a great bunch of melodies and also many examples of McCartney at his most melodic and experimental. 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey' is probably the best ...
