Advantages: get over you
Disadvantages: some weaker moments
Sophe Ellis Bextor arrived at just the right time for me. There was a gap in the pop market for a feisty and sultry female diva with style. Madonna was still lodding away, Kylie was in the background, but nobody was doing it for the Brits, until Sophie appeared of course.
Who is she:
Daughter of Janet Ellis, ex Blue Peter presenter. Sophie found a little fame in indie outfit The Audience. She then guested on Spiller's 'Groovejet' which was a number one hit single.
On this album:
For me, 'Murder On The Dancefloor' sums up the album. Unassuming, trendy and chic pop music. Sophie breezes her way through the song, barely singing, but speaking the verses, before arriving at a fruity and fun chorus. It is catchy, sparkly and everything pop. 'Take Me Home' was a cover, but done with her trademark style, giving it a dancefloor sensibility.
Other highlights:
'Music Gets The Best Of Me' is as close as she comes to outright disco. An effortless number with a chorus which could have been plucked straight from the seventies. 'Get Over You' has a nagging hookline which will remain with you for hours on end.
Thoughts:
There are enough pop delights on here to please any fan of SClub, Kylie or possibly even Madonna. Sophie does not sing brilliantly, but she trots her way through with ease and makes her mark as a stylish female performer.
Summary: chic
