The follow-up to MURMUR replicated that album’s knack for blending supremely accessible guitar-pop with cryptic themes and lyrics. Though not as strong as its predecessor track-for-track, there is still plenty to enjoy on RECKONING. ‘7 Chinese Brothers’ is a compelling mixture of intricate guitar melody and Michael Stipe’s penchant for peculiar imagery (“Wrap your heel in bones of steel…”).
