Advantages: two albums, one lively, one mellow
Disadvantages: none.
While the name is deceptive, red and rice are actually two seperate albums, more often than not available together, but you can also buy them seperatly. Red has a lot of Eliza Carthy's own material on it, including The Piano Accordian Song - which is excellent, and a very surprising piece at the end which sounds more like a dance track than folk, and uses the violin to great effect. This is a very lively, energetic album. Rice is a far more traditional album with tracks like "The snow it melts the soonest" and "Benjamin Bowmaneer" This is a far more mellow and traditional album. If you want something strange and alternative with a folk influence, by Red. If you want something more like traditional folk music, buy Rice. If you are the sort of person who likes listening to all sorts of things, buy the double album and have twice as much fun!

- 27/06/01 I love these albums, although I do prefer Eliza when she's playing the more traditional stuff. I actually got into folk/traditional music through listening to Eliza's stuff so I disagree with gailmill (I do love Norma as well though). |

- 24/06/01 I wouldn't advise anyone new to folk to listen to this album to 'get the ear in'. EC i's singing is very idiosyncratic I find. Much prefer Norma. |
